Re: Teaching and IVF

  • I'm not a teacher, but my friend is.  She was fortunate to have her IVF clinic a stone's throw from her school and was able to go to monitoring appts during an open period when she had one or lunch if need be.  She took 2 days off for ER and 2 days off for ET.  She now has a beautiful little girl.

I'm a clinician on an inpt psych unit, so similar-ish responsibilities (as in, if I'm not there, there's no one else who works with my patients) and it was a bit of a challenge with my clinic being a good distance from work.  I was very open with my supervisor about what was going on and just came in 30min late on days that I had monitoring.  My ER was a Sun, so I didn't miss work for that (should have taken Mon off in retrospect) and ET was the day after T'giving (I ended up taking Mon off as well).

It's annoying, but definitely do-able.  GL!

  • I'm also a teacher (but at a college). I had all my monitoring appointments first thing in the morning and took two days off for ER. My ET fell on a Saturday so no time off for that. I'll be honest, though, I felt "icky" for several days after ER and would have liked more time off. It's do-able though. Best of luck!

  • I am a teacher in a Catholic school so I can't tell them that I am having IVF because they have fired teachers for that.  It is against their teachings.  Just nonsense.  I also do not get breaks or sick days.  I usually go for monitoring on my way to work and I just have to see what the dr. says about how much time to take off.  I am hoping that something lands on a weekend so I do not have to take too much time off.  I will do whatever the dr. says.  Good Luck!

  • I am a teacher but I am very lucky that I teach on line so I work from home and am able to get away for an hour. I have only done IUI though. I hope you are able to work out your schedule with the school you work with.

I'm an elementary school teacher.  I was upfront with my principal so he knew exactly what was going on.  I missed 1 day for my repeat saline sonogram, another day for my trial transfer, the day of ER and the day after, and the day of ET and the day after.  In hind sight I wish I would have taken off 2 days after the ER cause I was hurting pretty bad that 1st day back.  I may sure to sit as much as possible and have the kids come to me.

I am a psych resident :)  Luckily my office is 10 minutes away from the hospital and clinics.  They also do ultrasounds starting at 7:15.  My supervisors all know what I am doing and they wouldn't care if I was late or need to use a sick day.

Teachers, how do you work your IVF into the school year? How many days are you having to miss? Thanks in advance.

I'm a teacher and I literally had to come late to school on the second day of school! I have taken a bunch of half days and have also missed some full days. During the end of the summer I was up front with my principal about what we were going through. She was very sympathetic and understanding. She has also let me come in a little late without penalizing me for it. It's difficult but it's definitely workable! Good luck with everything!

  • I was upfront with my principal about our decision to do IVF.  She was very understanding about it.  I made sure to try to get the first appointment of the day for my monitoring appointments and was late to school on those days.  I took the day of ER off and went back the next day (I felt fine).  Luckily ET was on a Saturday.

After this failed IVF cycle, I'm still trying to figure out if I should continue right away with a FET or wait until the school year is over.

  • Thanks so much ladies. I'm going to be upfront with my principal. I am just really nervous because this is my first year at the school and I would love to return next school year. :-)

I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one in this situation.  (Well, I do get sick days, but everything else is the same.)  I'm sooo careful about making sure no one at my work knows. It really stinks that we can't count on support of co-workers because of that.
