I asked for opinions on MNs the other day, but I never formally asked for your opinions on Ada. What are we thinking?
I love it, because I like the sound of lots of classic names like Emma, Anna, Ava, etc., but Ada is still hovering between 400-500 on the SSA list, so its not as popular. I also love that its German, which will match our last name well.
DH likes the name, but worries that its trendy.
WDYT?
Re: While we're on the subject, WDYT of Ada?
I like it. It's on our list of science names (DH is a software engineer and Ada Lovelace was a famous and influential pioneer in programming).
Ada isn't super trendy itself, but it is a cousin of the Addie/Addison/Adeline/Adele names, so it does have the flavor of that trend. It is trending up fairly steadily (not in top 1,000 in 2003, #494 in 2011), but doesn't seem to be destined for the top 10 any time soon. It's just riding the larger Addie wave.
Baby Name Popularity by State
Haha, I was thinking the same thing and am so surprised someone else brought this up. DH and I are both dentists so we have papers/magazines all over the house covered in ADA this and ADA that. I do not even see the name Ada, I just automatically say A-D-A since it comes out of my mouth pretty much on a daily basis.
Too funny! It seems like a silly criticism, but Ada just doesn't feel like a name to me... more like a grouping of letters.
I like it!
I think with all the Avas out there, Ada may have to repeat her name for people who will assume she said "Ava", though.

I was thinking this also. I really like Ada though.

I really like Ada, buuuut think of it with your last name.
For us, it sounds like, ATE A (insert food item that begins with a 'B')
Haha - that's so funny!
It actually sounds great with our last name (very German, similar to Krug). Ada is short and German, so it matches, but it isn't full of hard consonants. So I think they sound great together!
It's NMS, but it is nice and refreshing.
There is an Ada in our library, 2yo story time group.
I agree, I love the name! But I also really like Addison, Adelyn, etc too
Not that it matters, but the ant princess in A Bug's Life is Princess Ada. I like it!
Eta- I just noticed its pronounced Ay-dah. I was pronouncing it ah-dah Still like it
I like it and while it's jumped a lot in the last 7 years it's been above 1,000 on the SSA list (843-448), I wouldn't call that trendy. It was quite popular until the 1950s, it's just getting a good rise from the old fashioned name boost. I do agree with it might being misheard as Ava a lot though. As someone with a name that gets misheard a lot, it can be kind of annoying. I do like Ada though, I prefer the longer Adelaide though.
Oh, and it shouldn't be confused with the Biblical Adah though they are pronounced the same.
