Sorry, I don't know how to upload photos to show you an example. However, we did the Christmas light photo last year and it was easy (esp. if you have a digital camera). I dimmed the lights in the room and sat DD on the floor surrounded by a pile of lights. I made sure she wasn't directly against a wall, because I was getting funky shadows, but like 45 degrees from the wall because it looked weird to have the room so dark behind her.
You might play with your camera in advance (without DS) to see what settings work for you. My camera has many different settings, and I don't remember which one I used. If you won't be using a flash, you probably need to use a tripod/set your camera on something. If possible, I'd try to have all of these things worked out in advance because the pics can get very blurry if DC isn't sitting still. In our picture, I had her wear PJs and a Santa hat. For some of our Christmas cards, I made the whole picture black & white except for the hat. Either way, they both turned out cute and it was easy. GL!
Here is my xmas light pic from 2005:

I used a dark backdrop(a navy blue comforter, but many people use black sheet. I draped the comforter over a chair). I made sure that the room was filled with natural light and she was by a window. I gave her the lights to play with and I just snapped away. You have to NOT use the flash or the lights won't get that sparkly, glowing quality and the backdrop will show more. Without the flash, be prepared to take tons of pictures in order to get some good ones. I had many more that were blurry or not good. HTH!

We used a black fleece background, and we had natural light, etc. in the room. I think that we ended up using the flash just to make it turn out better, but it took FOREVER to get cute ones (and keep the lights out of his mouth).
