We were over at our friends house on Saturday and he plays guitar. He let Buddy play with one of his that wasn't fancy and he didn't play any more. By the end of the day Buddy was holding it and strumming and starting to pick up on needing both hands to work it. He was so sad to leave it (and his buddy!)
Then tonight we were doing a christmas wish list to santa and he drew a guitar and said he wanted one like B's and that he wanted to play music.
I found a decent deal on a "kids" one on amazon. I know very little about guitars in general.
I'd like to foster a love of music because I always wanted to play an instrument and my parents thought it was dumb.
Our friend B said he would teach Buddy if we did get him one. Even just basics while he's still so little as a foundation.
Here is the link to the one I found on amazon

Re: Guitar for a 3 yr old?
Siggy check.
I agree with this. There are tons of kid's guitars out there, even if you just go to Toys R Us or Target, you can find a small acoustic guitar to get your little one started.
We have little music lovers in our house too and they both love the guitar. We originally bought a really cheap acoustic guitar. It has help up well but I have not had to worry much about it. DS2 drags it around the house constantly.
For a 3 year old, I would probably stick to a basic acoustic guitar, keep it really simple.
This is the one DS has on his xmas list:
