FFS.

I'm just going to cry.

So, DS has been on reflux meds since week 4. He's been on Zantac, Prilosec, and now Prevacid. I'm guessing it's working, but we can't really tell because we haven't not given him a reflux med in two months. At 8 weeks, his pediatrician told us to put cereal in every bottle. We did. He went from pooping every diaper to not pooping for five days. Begin the suppository train. We stopped giving him the cereal, but he hasnt pooped the same since. So for a month, we've been having to watch his bowel movements and give him suppisotories if needed.

Fast forward to yesterday when he started having diarrhea...green, yellow, not seedy, full of stringy mucous. I thought it was because of teething so we just kept putting cream on it. Here we are today and he's developing BLISTERS.

So, we let him hang out naked all morning and keep applying the cream...no change. I call his pediatrician and he tells me to mix 2oz of Pedialyte with 2oz of BM. DS usually eats 4oz of BM every two hours. Won't he still be hungry? No, says his doctor. Call and make an appointment in the morning if he's still going. Then, I look on KellyMom and it says that unless your breastfed baby is dehydrated, which he isn't...having normal pees, etc., you shouldn't give them anything but BM and giving Pedialyte is an "old practice." My brain hurts. I'm a FTM. I don't know what the eff to do. I feel so helpless.
We have a GI appointment tomorrow for the reflux.

Re: FFS.

  • If he's drooling and peeing he's not dehydrated. Cake on cream. Try Butt Paste. That worked really well for Dax. Desitin works really well for Addy. I caked it on so it was so thick. And use a wet towel/washcloth or wet paper towel. Addy had a raw butt for a week or two. Horrible. I'm so sorry. It's the poop that's burning his butt, so if you let him sit aired out, then he won't be pooping on his butt. Does that make sense? Good luck, I'm so sorry.

  • I don't think it'll hurt to give a little bit if pedialyte. If he's still peeing he probably isn't dehydrated, but your Pedi may just want to be cautious. If you buy pedialyte try to get a smaller container. You have to throw it out after 24 or 48 hrs of opening it.

Hope you get your answers soon. FWIW, my LO also started popping less, and he hasn't taken any meds except gas drops.

Edit... Also wanted to add about the rash. Jayson had a rash that wouldn't go away. I think it was a yeast rash, but regardless here's what I did. After using wipes to clean him i dried him with a clean washcloth or paper towel before putting on cream. Also, if you can.. because I know its hard, try to keep him completely naked for a while to get some air on that booty

We're using hospital strength cream that I took home from work. The Desitin and Butt Paste both haven't worked in the past. Thanks, and it totally made sense!

  • Not that this sounds any better, but when DS had blisters from his diaper rash that wouldn't go away, the pedi said he had the milk protein intolerance so maybe ask your doctor about allergies if those haven't already been ruled out. Also, go with what pp suggested about drying his bottom with a clean washcloth or paper towels before applying the cream. I even went as far as to not use regular wipes and just use the Viva paper towels and a spray bottle with water until ds's rash went away.

Good luck! Hope it gets cleared up quick and you get the GI thing straightened out.
  • Are you using criticaide? We use it on drug withdrawal babies and it works miracles! Sorry you and both Sergio's have to deal with this :

  • Lo is on Zantac and I have dealt with the stringy poops. We had to switch up formulas a few times. I don't want to jinx myself but I have been on Zantac 1ml 2x a day now since lo was 5 weeks old. The BEST and I mean BEST formula is Gerber Soothe. It is pretty close to nutramagin as far as being broken down and has a wheat protein base and a probiotic. Alot of formulas like Similac Sensitve the first ingredient is sugar which in my opinion is crap.  Lo had terrible gas and reflux which made him unbearable for the first two months of his life. Now hes completely different and not in pain. I wish you the best of luck! Keep us posted!

  • Ps. Tripple Paste works wonders I coat it on so thick that it looks like it snowed on his tush! :)

More of a green paste is Earth Mama or Earth Baby Paste... it works but not as wonderful as TP.

  • The blisters in his diaper area could be an indicator of a yeast rash.  Your GI doc should be able to confirm that and either prescribe you some Nystatin or send you to the store for Lotrimin AF.  Triple Paste AF also works wonders on yeast rashes.

Hoping you get some answers soon!  Poor baby and poor mama!

FWIW, DD was on Prevacid Solutabs until around 9 months for reflux.  It worked very well for her and relieved her reflux pain when no other meds did.  She took awhile to wean from it, but no problems since coming off it and she's 4 yrs old now.  GL tomorrow!

  • I 2nd (3rd?) yeast rash. The only time rash cream doesn't work is usually yeast rash. Try an antifungal cream like nystatin, clotrimazole, or miconazole. I used clotrimazole on older son when he was a baby and rash was gone in a day. Over the counter should be fine. I'm almost positive that its yeast.

  • All I had to do for Jaysons yeast rash was probiotics for a few days, and calendula cream. Cleared up in less than a week. He hasn't had a diaper rash since.
