shots vs. suppositories

My RE?s office says that it is a matter of preference.
Now I am torn on the choice to make.
I am on suppositories right now 2 in the am, 2 in the pm. To be honest I hate them and I am not sure if I am doing it right, I do get some on my pantyliner and on the toilet paper.  (sorry if that is TMI) How do you know that you are absorbing what you are supposed to?

Any advice would be wonderful..

*Also out of our 8 embies, 6 are beautiful and 2 are alittle slower...transfer on Monday, EEK!!

Re: shots vs. suppositories

  • I'm on both and HATE the suppositories. So long as you are getting them as high up and as close to your cervix as possible and laying down or sitting for about 30 minutes right after then you're definitely absorbing all you need. It's normal to have a good bit of discharge.

I personally would only take the shot if I'd been given that option though.

    Good luck on Monday!!!!

  • I asked how far they were supposed to go. If you've ever used an OB tampon, you should be fine. You will see some discharge; that's to be expected.

I never done PIO, but I don't mind only one intramuscular shot! I know someone who ended up with hematomas doing six weeks of progesterone shots.

  • I'm doing both.  I thought the shots would be horrible, but they aren't.  I'm not a huge fan of the supps, but I'll do it if it gets me closer to a rainbow.  The discharge is the non-progesterone part of the supp - the binders in effect.  Don't worry - you're body takes what it needs.  GL!

  • Just wanted to mention that I have found that not all progesterone supps are of the same quality.  The first time I used them I got them from a fertility pharmacy and I thought they were great.  Wondered what all the fuss was about.  Only a tiny bit of discharge but for the most part none at all, especially if I could stay seated or laying down for a little bit.  Recently I purchased them locally from a compounding pharmacy and they were terrible.  They just melted out of me like a faucet.  It would keep me awake a night like a wet diaper. (sorry for the TMI)   Just wanted to mention that if it does seem like a problem, try a different pharmacy.

  • I have no experience with the suppositories. But I did have to do the PIO shots for only about 5 days before my transfer was cancelled. I'm a sports person, and i've had every surgery and injury you can imagine that never phased me.

But these shots hurt! I had a hard time sitting for longer than about 20 minutes, the pain from the shots was making my lower back cramp. I felt like i had done a crazy squat and lunge work out every day.

And this was only for 5 days. I cannot imagine the people that have to go through the first tri-mester.

  • I have no experience with PIO and I hate the supps!! Even with that being said I think I would push to stay on supps because DH is not home every night because of his shift work so it would be difficult for me to find someone to give me the shot. As I said I hate the supps but nothing a panty liner can't help with.

  • I'm I'm endometrin supps. I asked my Dr about PIO and he said they stopped using that years ago.. and then threw in a story about how he was just lecturing on this in some conference. lol. whatevs. The supps have been fine so far and no more shots so I'm good.

  • I used the suppositories after our last IUI cycle and they weren't as bad as I had been told. I had a tiny bit of discharge within the first hour or so of inserting them, but not much after that. And it did a great job of raising my Prog level. I was at 12.5 on my cycle before I started them, and 34.8 on the same day of my cycle with them. So they def work!

    **TTC #1 Sep 2009-Feb 2013**   Me: 33 DH: 32 (healthy, SA = normal)

    TTC #2 March - August 2015 = all BFNs

Prep for FET #1: Aug 2015: found "mass" in uterus on saline sonogram; scheduled a hysteroscopy to remove.

Sept 2015: Hysteroscopy: mass turned out to be scar tissue(?), all removed. Recheck saline sonogram 2 weeks later showed "stuff" still in uterus (more scar tissue? remnants from surgery? Will see if clears with a period). Recheck saline sonogram 1 week later: all clear! Start Lupron and Estrace. Follow up u/s 2 weeks later: uterine lining only 5mm, add in patches. Follow up u/s 1 week later: uterine lining = 4.3mm (argh!), stop estrace and patches and start estradiol injections twice/week. Follow up u/s 2 weeks later: uterine lining = 5mm :/ Instructed to keep on estradiol injections and recheck in 5 days = lining still at 5mm. Need to make a decision - go for it? Or toss in the towel w/ this cycle and start all over again next year with a new protocol. Decided to go for it as we had 17 frosties; what have we got to lose??

    12/2/15 = transferred 1 perfect Grade B blast
