Re: Should she be fired? let's discuss...

I've read different articles and just happen to copy this one to post... but from what I understand she was at arlington with work.

Does it make a difference if she did this during work hours/while with work or on her own time on vacation?

  • All I see is a little white box with a red x inside.  But I'm going to assume it's the lady that gave Arlington National Cemetery the bird and say yes, she should be fired because she was there for a work trip.

And she should be very, very ashamed of herself.

  • Wow what a dumb cu.nt. I hate when when I have to pull out the C word.

  • I've read the phrase "She meant no disrespect" Several times in that article. How is that possible. Her full intention had to be disrespect! There is no other thing it could be!

  • When I heard about this on the radio, I thought she was standing there flipping off the guard. Her just standing next to the sign... I feel like that could've been any "please be quite sign" and she was just "being funny" and obvs totally disrepectful. I don't think and I could totally be wrong, but I don't think she meant to directly disrepect the tomb of the unknown solider. I think she was just stupid for lack of better words.

ETA: I'm not defending her... she's a complete moron and I'm all for freedom of speech but agree with a statement I heard that freedom of speech does not mean freedom of consequenses.

This idiot makes me so angry.

    Where does she work?

a non profit called LIFE that helps disabled people.

she's bending down in front of a sign that says, "Arlington Cemetary Silence and Respect" she's acting like she's yelling while flipping the bird to the sign.

Of all the "quiet" signs in the world, she should know better than to mock that one.

    agree. totally agree.

  • Yes, I think her employers have every right to fire her.

  • Yes. She acted completely unprofessionally on a work trip. She made her employer look bad.

Aside from that, what a douche. Did anyone see her follow up tweet? "OBVIOUSLY we meant NO disrespect to the people that serve..." And "this was just us... Challenging authority in general."

Challenging the authority of a sign is so stupid. And I'd say that it is obvious this was disrespectful.

  • I was able to follow the link and it's exactly the picture I thought it would be.  I'm extremely offended by her actions.  Of all places to "challenge authority", this is maybe the most tasteless, surrounded by people who gave their lives for our freedom.  It is extremely disrespectful and I shudder to think of how she treats the disabled veterans that are likely in her facility or worse, in her care.

It's sickening.  She should certainly be fired.  I don't know about whether the person that took the picture should also be fired, but I'm glad they've both been placed on unpaid leave.  I have yet to read or hear about any kind of sincere apology coming from either of them.

I love that in her statement, she says "Obviously, we meant no disrespect."  BS.  It is obviously the exact opposite.

  • She should be fired if she was there on business for her company, which I believe she was.  Otherwise, no.  I don't agree with company's firing people for legal (however disgusting) choices they make when they are off the company clock.

I must've skipped over that part but as soon as I saw the picture I wondered about who the person was that took the picture...

  • I would say they have grounds to fire her based on the shame that she brought to their company alone.  Like it or not, every employee is an ambassador for their company.  The company will see repurcussions from this, whether they should or not.

This is a great lesson to be careful what you put out on social media.

  • A comment in the article was something like, "should stones life be ruined over one stupid photo?"

Am I being dramatic to say, "should this company and the rest of its employees suffer (lose money from people not coming into and or leaving this facility/getting hate mail etc) because of one persons stupid actions?

  • Disgusting.  Yes, she should be fired if she was there on a work trip.  Honestly, even if she was there on her own time it is reasonable to fire her because it still reflects on her as a person, and that in turn can bring bad light to the company if they continue to employ her.

Yes but doesn't this bring into question about what happens when we don't all  have the same values?  What if she was caught cheating on her husband?  That certainly speaks to her as a person but should she be fired?  Obviously sexual orientation is a protected class but what if it wasn't and someone felt it was immoral?  Fired for that?  I think this woman is grossly disrespectful but I maintain she should only be fired if she was representing her company at the time the photo was taken.

Let's put it this way: If I ran a company who worked with disabled people (and possibly disabled vets as well), and an employee of mine did this at Arlington National Cemetery, you bet your ass that I wouldn't have someone like this representing my company. They have every right to fire her, whether this was a business trip, on her own time, or whatever. This is just disgusting.

    I totally agree.

  • She is based out of Massachusetts, I believe? That's an at-will state as far as employment goes. They have the legal grounds to fire her, and if they did, it wouldn't hurt my feelings at all.
    "To me, you are perfect."

  • Even if she weren't on company time, if the photo went viral and the public found out where she worked, they should be able to fire her.  The company could easily face repercussions because of it, especially a non-profit.  I could see people deciding to give elsewhere because of who his company hires.

And she was "challenging authority?"  Whose authority?  Dead soldiers?  What the hell was she thinking?

  • She was on company time and she works for a company that works with disabled vets.  There is no reason she should not be fired.

  • Out of a cannon yes. That is totally disrespectful. I do feel that people are representatives of their employers and that was just totally distasteful. There's other ways to challenge authority without being that much of an a**hole.

  • I would fire her.

I would fire her for being stupid if nothing else.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • She acted like a disrespectful douche while she was representing her employer. Fire her @ss. I'm sure there are plenty of unemployed people that aren't fuckwads that would appreciate having her job.

  • I'd fire her for being so f?cking stupid to post something like this on the Internet. Obviously her FB settings were loose enough to allow it to go viral. Dumb?ss.

Regardless that I think she's a complete piece of sh?t for her actions, and she should be drawn and quartered, she's just too dumb to continue on my payroll.

Yes, she should be fired. My stomach dropped out when I saw that. DH is military, and we know people in that cemetery. I know she has freedom of speech, but she shouldn't be disrespectful of those who made it possible.

Agreed.  DH and I are both military and have served in both the Iraq and AFG wars.  We also just buried our friend who was killed in action there last month, so I think she's a total *sshole and I'm glad she was fired.

Edit: She was just put on unpaid leave.  But I think she should be fired.  Especially considering what she does for work.  Do you know how many disabled veterans she just offended?  What a moron.

I haven't gone through all the responses yet, but here's my opinion:

I doubt this type of behaviour (regardless who it is directed to) would be tolerated in her workplace, so if this happened while she was on the clock, I think the employer would be in their right to take disciplinary actions, even fire her. If it happened after hours and doesn't impact her company (for instance, being an office clerk vs the PR person), then I don't think the employer should get a say.

  • I am mixed about this.

    Freedom of speech. Fine.

    Disrespectful. Yes.

Posting it on your FB page. Absolutely stupid.

But, unfortunately, you can't fix stupid.

  • Yes.  That's insane.  If she had such poor judgment to do this, I would imagine she is a peach otherwise as well.

  • I just logged onto her employer's FB page out of curiosity and they have officially been fired.  Both of them.

  • I'm also hearing stories these idiots posted the picture on their work site. They should be fired for stupidity alone if that is true.
