Low Ovarian Reserve...AMH testing

I am 33 years old and I just had my AMH tested and the results came backas a 0.27.  I have not yet talked with the doctor to discuss what this means or my options but I am obviously devestated.   All I know is I fall in the "very low" category.  Has anyone else had a similar result?  I am meeting with the doctor next week and I'm just wondering what to expect...has anyone gotten pregnant with this low of an AMH....looking for some hope.  Thanks ladies :)

Re: Low Ovarian Reserve...AMH testing

  • I'm not sure how much faith I put in AMH results anymore. My 1st AMH result was .38 and then not even a year later it was .97. I don't know why it went up, but it hasn't helped me get PG. I've heard of women getting PG both through IF treatments and on their own with low AMH results, but I don't have a personal success story to share.

Were your AMH results done at different labs? Just wondering.

I'm not sure how much I trust the AMH results from when I had the test done since the lab that drew it didn't even know about the test and was sending it off to a different lab for testing. The lab didn't know what type of tube to put it in, whether it was supposed to be at room temp, chilled, or frozen. It was a debacle.

I've also read a couple of journal articles that concluded that certain ranges can predict whether you may under respond, respond normally, or hyperstimulate with inject protocols. I think the AMH in conjunction with the other hormone levels and AFC may give you an indication of egg quality and reserve, but that one low number in and of itself shouldn't worry you too much. My AMH was 1.08, but all my other levels were normal and AFC was 14. So at this point I'm not worrying too much, but will likely move to IVF if IUI #2 doesn't work.

One was drawn at my OBGYN's office and the other at my RE's, but I *think* they were both sent out to Quest Diagnostics. My RE's nurse did ask if I was sick when the original was drawn, but I wasn't. I just don't know how it could have changed so drastically.

I agree that the one low number alone isn't as big of a deal as the overall picture.

  • OP I looked at your other posts & if you had a baby in April and it was conceived without medical assistance then I wouldn't worry too much about the AMH results. Good luck!

  • I wouldn't trust AMH on it's own.  My AMH was 0.57 (I think) but my FSH was 6.8 (so mid-level fine) and my AFC has been fine.  For our first IVF, they managed to retrieve 15 eggs, 9 of which were mature and were able to fertilize 7 of them.  For having a low AMH, I certainly didn't expect to get that many eggs.

    Ditto this!!

I also have to wonder about AMH. I always thought it not only meant you had the reserve but that the better the number, the better the quality. Mine is normal at nearly 4.0 but both IVF cycles have produced craptastic eggs....total of 30 eggs retrieved between both cycles but only 1 that made it to an 8cell for transfer the first time, and 2 badly fragmented 5 cells on my 2nd transfer.

It really is only one piece of the puzzle as to what, if any, issues you could possible face getting pregnant.

  • Ditto what everyone else said. AMH numbers are "controversial" in RE land , as an example, my RE never drew mine and I've had 3 IVFs. I just recently asked for it.

A better picture is developed when a doc can see your AFC, how you respond to stims and get a sense of your egg/embryo quality - it's a view that takes everything into account.

  • Sometimes it means nothing.. sometimes it fits right in.

I'm young, FSH was good at 6.1, and always produced 3 follies on Femara for IUIs so we didn't test it.

Then as I started IVF they tested my AMH. It came back 0.69 and suddenly I only had 5 retrieved and 3 fert. even though my AFC was 15. Seems my low AMH meant something with those numbers from ER.

  • We got pregnant with my now 7 month old daughter by way of IUI.  Prior to getting pregnant with her I had one high FSH (18) and the rest were normal and I would only produce 1-2 follicles even with the help of clomid and the drs were  concerned at that point.  Thanks ladies for the advice :)
