? and vent - pedi (today's theme?)

My question is: when does your pediatrician's office answer the phone?

Vent: We can call the triage line anytime and leave a message and a nurse returns your call but it's not very helpful and sometimes you wait quite a while. To actually get MY doctor's nurse, get questions answered/meds called into the pharmacy/schedule a same-day appointment, I have to wait till 8am. I have to be at work at 8am. Of course, if she's really sick, I'll stay home either way and it's NBD but sometimes it's something I'm not really sure about and want to talk to someone about whether I should bring her in to the office or not, which means I then have to coordinate with work, with my mom if she's going to help me, etc. Just wish they at least had someone on phone duty starting at 7 or even 7:30 - makes for stressful mornings when I have a vaguely fussy, not quite herself but not obviously sick baby.

Just FYI, if you're thinking, "why are you calling the pedi when she's fussy?" - she has tubes in her ears, and so sometimes I'm not sure if her ears are bothering her or something else, or if we need to bring her in or just get an RX for drops called in, etc. I'm not calling the pedi every time she has a bad night or is clingy in the morning.

  • Nurse line 8-6 I think, they answer the phone unless it's busy then you get a pretty quick call back. They are the nurses for all of the practice and can look up your kid's info. The nurse Amy kept me sane through Alex's first few months.

You can also leave a message for a ill visit for the following day and they call pretty much first thing in the morning.  There is also an on call doctor if you need one.

  • Ours doesn't start answering til 9.  But they generally aren't going to advice you if you should come in or not it's just if you feel like you need to come in so I dont know that it would really matter.

  • Our health insurance has a 24 hour nurse line.  Our pedi has an after-hours doctor on call who will return calls 24 hours, but it is sometimes a 30-45 minute wait.

Your vent is one of the marvels of the fulltime working mom.  I've done it and quit.  I think you moms that do it are a wonder of juggling skills.  Kudos.
