Back Pain after sleeping

Mobile: Back Pain after Sleeping.

Ugh!  Almost every day when I wake up I have the most uncomfortable back pain now.  It occurs when I spend the whole night sleeping on my sides.  I'm a side sleeper anyway, but never has my back hurt like this when i got up.  It goes away after I get up and move around for about 20-30 minutes, but if I stay in bed it continues unless I lay flat on my back.

Anyone else?  Suggestions?  I'd be okay sleeping on my back, but I just don't stay there.  I thought I had weeks before this kind of stuff happened!  I guess I was kidding myself.  I'm 16w 2d.

Re: Back Pain after sleeping

  • I'm just getting up at 4am now when the pain becomes unbearable. My hips, crotch and thighs feel incredibly sore and my back tightens up to the point that I can't walk, once I've been in bed for more than about 6 hours, so I'm just getting up once things start to stiffen up, and napping during the day when I can. :-/ I have found NOTHING to help it...I'm guessing delivering the babies would have a great effect... :-)

  • I haven't been able to sleep in my bed for quite some time now, I think I stopped just shy of 20 weeks. I am now sleeping in my recliner, and surprisingly, other than waking up 20 times a night to pee, it is very comfortable and I sleep well there. I have tried to lay in our bed, but have been able to spend more than 20 minutes before the back/hip pain is excruciating. Thankfully, DH sleeps in the other recliner, so at least we are still sleeping "together." I am sorry you are so uncomfortable, and hope that you find your solution soon!

  • This morning is the first time I've woken up with back pain since 1st tri... probably due to my chiropractic care that has been doing wonders.  My hips have felt really 'loose' and painful as well, with clicking/popping.

To be honest I was a little worried the back pain might be the start of contractions, but I have an appt with my CNM today so I'm going to tell her about it in a few hours.

I told DH that I think I finally hit the forever downward spiral for being uncomfortable, almost every day it seems to be getting just a little bit worse... and I told him the next 4+ weeks (hopefully) are just going to be tough so I apologized for the complaining ahead of time.

I think I might try to the recliner tonight if I can get comfortable enough to get to sleep...

  • I just might try the recliner next time I wake up in pain.  That's a good idea!

  • I had back issues (L4-L5 discectomy in Jan) and am now having reoccuring back pain and I'm only 11wks!

I plan to make an ortho appointment soon if it doesnt get any better, but what I have done in the meantime to soothe it is sleep with a big pillow b/w my legs if I'm laying on my side because it puts the spine in a nuetral position.  I also take care during the day when I do things like bend over and when I pick stuff up.  I try to squat to do everything instead of bending at my waist.

The problem for me is that the pain is in my mid-back and I really don't know how to handle that...if it was my lumbar I would have some idea.

  • I would have thought my nice Temperpedic bed would keep me aligned, but I guess not. I'll try the pillow too before I leave my husband and set up shop in the recliner :)

It is totally mid-back pain.  It's really irritating.  Thankfully my MIL is here this week and she can massage my back some for me.  She is a massuese :)

  • I went through a period of time like that.  I tried a body pillow and the snoogle.  They didn't really help much.  I slept propped up for a while and it helped.  It ended up passing.  I am hoping it lasts.  I have found that shoving a pillow under my belly to support it has helped.  I hope that you are just going through some growing pains and you will get a break.  I had a very tough time for a few weeks, but the past 3 weeks have been the best I have felt the entire time.  I hope that is coming your way.

  • Try a Snoogle and a pregnancy wedge for under your belly.  Your belly pulling on your back while you're sleeping on your side could be causing the pain.  That may help you get through a few more weeks.  By the end it will just pretty much be hellish.  I slept in 15 minute increments for about the last month (at least) of my pregnancy.  If I didn't have to pee I was waking up to searing pain in my hips and/or back.  I had to have my DH help me out of the bed (and sometimes off the toilet) for the last couple of weeks.

  • Try massage with tennis balls. Very light touch either by DH or the wall. Really helps!!
