Parenting after a Loss

Be warned - the 4 mo wakeful sucks!

My DD has always been a crappy sleeper, waking about 4-5 times a night for her pacifier and that doesn't include her one MOTN feeding.  Since friday, she's been waking 6-10 times per night.  The night before last I was awake for 3 hrs because she stirred for her pacifier about ever 10 min.  Last night I didn't get one whole, uninterrupted hr of sleep until after her MOTN feeding which is after 4am so I slept from 5am-6:30 before the dogs woke me up.

During the day, her normal short naps of 30 min no longer exist.  Now she's napping for 15-20 min.

I feel awful.

  • My DS is younger then your DD but he was doing this the past couple nights.  I must have gone back and forth from our room to his nursery 10 times between 1am & 5am.  I was exhausted yesterday but luckily it only lasted a couple days and last night he slept for 5hrs straight, woke to eat, then slept another 3hrs.  Hang in there! Hopefully your DS will be back on his normal schedule soon.  Can your DH wake up a few of those times to give her the binky so that you can sleep?

  • DS is hitting this now, too..!! Although, we don't have it nearly as bad as you!! I pity you!!!

DS is a very GOOD sleeper, so he's only waking 1-2x/night lately.. usually he'll fuss in his crib for about 5 minutes, and then put himself back to sleep.. only a few times have I had to go in and just rub his tummy to console him.. he doesn't take a pacifier, and doesn't get up for a MOTN feeding.. However, it's definitely cutting in to my sleep, since I get up at 5am for work!  I'm not used to him stirring so much at night, which keeps me up thinking something is wrong..

Hopefully, this too shall pass :)

Unfortunately, I'm a light sleeper so DD wakesmeup first and even if I woke DH to take care of her, I'd still be awake, listening in & unable to fall back asleep until DH is done with her.  Also, I had DH pull baby duty half the night when DD was a newborn and he's a total bear to deal with if he doesn't get his sleep so I just don'thave it in me to be sleep-deprived with a cranky hubby too.  And there are some nights where DH HAS to get good sleep because he's flying the next day (military).
