Baby Names

Another one- Roscoe

We have the name Roscoe on our long list. H really loves this name, I like it quite a bit. It fits our old man name style. I have a really good association with it, as it is my oncologist's first name, and he's such sweet old guy.

On my giant name poll (https://blindyswife.surveydaddy.com/s/blindy-s-name-list) it has gotten terrible reviews. It is the most hated name on the list. My feelings aren't hurt, I promise. ;) I know my style isn't for everyone, and that's okay. (I literally lol'd at one of the comments on the poll: "This is the worst name list I've seen" haha)

I am curious to get some specific feedback on Roscoe, and what you don't like about the name. (or DO like, if that's the case.) Again, you won't hurt my feelings, so be honest.

(Oh, and whichever one of you suggested Nevaeh in my comments section... you were joking, right?) :-D

  • Eh. I had a dog named Roscoe. I like it better for a dog/pet, honestly.

If you love it, then go for it.

  • It just seems more of a nickname or pet name (animal, not like "honey") to me.

I have a friend whose dog is named Roscoe. So I can't get past that.

  • SIL's dog is Roscoe. And Roscoe P Coltrain, sheriff on the Dukes of Hazard. Every time I hear Roscoe, in my head I'm saying it how he said it on the show. It's a no go for me.
  • First thing that pops into my mind is a Rottweiler, lol not too be mean it's literally just the first thing I thought of when I saw the post title!

It could grow on me though, it's definitely one I haven't heard before on a child! It's kind of cool in retrospect.

  • I'll echo PPs in saying that the first thing that comes to mind is a dog. I know a few pups with the name, but no humans!
  • Roscoe =

  • I don't like it because it makes me think of The Dukes of Hazzard and then I hear that dumb George Bush style laugh. Sorry. I'm old though, kids his age probably won't relate.

  • Upon hearing the name, my first thought is that of a beagle. If forced to imagine a person witht he name, I immediately imagine a haychewing, yeehaw screaming, overall clad, Hazard kin.

  • My first reaction to Roscoe was that I really don't like it. My mind went straight to a dog. But then I read your OP and I think it would work for you guys. It's not a name that I would pick, but it seems like it fits your style and you guys could pull it off.

  • I wish I could love this name but DH had a dog with the same name. Sorry =(

I just did your survey and saw that alot of your names are from characters in books or movies (not sure if you did this on purpose or not)

I think Linus and Nevaeh are definitely a perfect sibset if you have a girl Wink

    Hahaha definitely! ;)

    Nope, that's just coincidental.

On a related note: one of the reasons my H won't get on board with Oscar is because he thinks it might be too much to have two cartoon/kid/character type names in a row. I don't agree with him in this instance, though.

  • My brothers name is Ross and uses Roscoe for his nickname...love Ross but not Roscoe so maybe you can use Ross for short....
  • When I hear the name, I think of Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles (the restaurant). I suppose this would be because of where I live (California).

Edited to add: BTW, I like Oscar. I think Oscar and Linus would make a nice sibset.

  • To me it seems like a dog name. A good dog name. but still a dog name. I guess he could go by Ross, but that would make me think of Friends.

I don't think it's terrible, it's just not my style. It is, however, a legit, correctly spelled name so if you love it, go for it.

  • I guess I just think of it more of an animal type name.  DH's grandmother's dog is Roscoe and there used to be an old show called Ranger Charlie and her Racoon Roscoe.
