February 2012 Moms

What do you do that you swore you wouldn't do?

The post below (starbuck) got me thinking about all those things we all swore we wouldn't do or that we judged other people for doing before we had babies, but now that we have LOs, we totally do it.

Mine is that I swore my LO wouldn't use a pacifier or if he/she did, I would take it away early.  My DS just gave his up at 3!  I KNOW people totally judged me for it, but there were so many other "fights" we had to win for his health/safety that we decided that was one we'd let go.  It made him happy, and he only used it for naps and bedtime.

So what did you swear you would never do as a parent, but you totally have already and maybe feel bad that you ever judged other moms for doing it?

  • I judged a friend who wouldn't try to get her LO to sleep in their bassinet/crib and wouild sleep on the couch while LO slept in the bouncer/carrier/etc. Hayley was going to sleep in her own bed. And so she did...until August.

Now we sleep on the couch...and I like it...

  • The other day I opened up a container of puffs and fed them to DD while we were shopping.  I always judged mom's who were letting their kids eat food in the grocery store before they had paid for it.  But once DD saw the puffs she demanded them.  She was yelling so I did it.  I broke my rule and I am sure I will do it again.

  • I swore I'd never do the "thumb lick, face wipe" thing. I didn't even make it a month. The shame!

  • CIO is the main one. Other smaller ones, like using a jumparoo and an exersaucer, or dressing him in pretty traditional "boy" clothes. I always knew I'd be eating crow as a parent, but the CIO one really shocked me.

  • Bed share. DD wouldn't sleep by herself for the first few months! She still sleeps better if someones holding her.
I also wasn't a fan of the paci, but I found myself begging her to take one!

  • So far so good! Maybe she wears a little more pink than I would have chosen, but that's because all her clothes are hand me downs.

  • CIO- I did a modified version of Ferber in the end.

I also judged a family member for putting her kid to bed at 630. I totally get it now. My daughter is in bed by 7-730 latest every night. If it goes past that she is a monster!

  • I always swore I WOULD let my baby cry. I believed that they had to cry and know that someone wasn't always coming to get them.

Then I read all the reasons I shouldn't plus I had him and there was no way that little face was going to cry!!

I've since let him cry for a few minutes here and there but I've never done CIO.

  • We let him watch television, which I wanted to hold off on until he was at least one and more like two.  It is only in short amounts (30 minutes, twice a day max), but we let him do it.  He loves it.  He gets all happy and dances.  I started doing it once he was pretty mobile and I needed to pump.  It was a life-saver!  He could watch Sesame Street or Super Why and I could pump without little grabby hands trying to pull out the tubes.

  • I did nto think I would ever have a girl and was never a girly girl, thus I did not think I would ever have a girly girl daughter.  She is always, always, always in pink or purple, bows, dresses, etc.

    This was/is totally me!
Plus, I never thought I would bedshare or allow him to have refined sugar before a year, but it's in everything!

  • I swore I would never leave the room when the dogs are in the house with DD. Do it daily.

I swore I would never rock her to sleep, this is my favorite part of the day. (I dont do it everynight but occasionally)

  • I swore if I had a day off from work I would obviously keep DS and not send him to daycare.  Well I have one of my first days off next week (actually all of next week off) and I plan on taking him everyday to daycare and picking him up early (or dropping him off late) just so I can have some uninterrupted me time (swore I would never do that)!
