I don't think there is a "right" answer here. It's different for every family. I think the most common age gap is 3-4 years and thats what I voted because thats what we will be doing.

I know - don't worry, I won't really be making any family planning decisions based on this - I'm just interested to know
I think like 2-3 but there's no right answer. Kids born 9 months apart may not be close and kids born years apart may be. For parental sanity I think 2-3 is good We weren't ready for another one to be born until recently so 3 years it is for us.
We planned for 2 yrs apart so we could get all the diaper, sleep deprived, teething stages behind us as fast as possible. If we had a 3 or 4 yr gap I would have a really hard time repeating the infant stages all over, I think...
That was us as well.
But then again, watching DD1 love on "her baby" (and by that, I mean hugging and kissing my belly) is making me see there are advantages to a wider gap, too. I love that she will be able to "help", or at least, play independently or maybe even keep DD2 entertained (wishful thinking? hopefully not) while I care for the new baby.

I say 2-3 years.
Kids who are too close together often have serious sibling rivalry and fight like crazy.
