Boo to Baby Colds! Who's got survival tips?

Okay, my sweet baby is having his first cold (stuffy nose, cough, and I'm guessing sore/scratchy throat (cause that is what I have)).  We have saline drops to help break up the congestion and the nose frieda for boogie removal.   He is getting upset trying to drink from his bottle because he has to stop to breathe (he just doesn't get why his nose isn't working!).  He wanted nothing to do with eating breakfast.  I know is that cold meds aren't recommended for babies.  Other than maybe sitting in a room with a steamy shower going, I can't think of what else to do to help him.

Anyone else have any good survival tips or things to make him more comfortable?

  • Humidifier in his bedroom at night (we did this on top of what you're already doing and it helped a lot). For the most part you just have suffer through it. When DS had his month long cold he had the most trouble sleeping so I was up with him helping him calm down

  • Our pedi told us to put vapor rub on the bottom of his feet at night and then put his pj's on so he can't grab at it. We have a sniffly baby too. It sucks, doesn't it? :(

  • Cool mist humidifier plus Vick's waterless vaporizer (with the scented pads).  Our pediatrician said that the Vick's thing doesn't help to fix any of the problems but that if it helps to alleviate the congestion temporarily to allow them to sleep better to go for it.  It seems to help them breathe better at night so we use it.  If you go that route, the pads are cheapest on Amazon from what I've been able to find.

  • I swear by the saline nose Spray.  I know you said you have the drops, but they make a spray that works so much better, in my opinion.  It has truly been a life saver for us.  Even with just teething, and him being snotty because of that, I use the spray.  It makes him sneeze, so it's almost like him being able to blow his nose.  So, I'll spray, he'll sneeze and get it out and I'll spray again to keep it coated.  The pedi said it's 'not habit forming' so I can use it as much as I need to.  I aslo recommend the vicks baby rub.  Pedi said that it might help with the symptoms...not make it go away, but help.  I notice that it'll help for a couple of days then it doesn't, so I quit using it...or just use it every other.  I rub his chest down really good, and his feet, before putting him to bed.  I also had a vaporizer that I use and put vicks in that too.

Poor little guy, hope he feels better soon.  It sucks having a sick LO because there's not much you can do for them.  Oh, and as far as eating/drinking goes, our pedi said try giving Pedialtye, cold.  Sometimes that feels good going down, and they'll get what they need from that if they're refusing everything else.  Hydration is a big issue when they're sick...so try Pedialtye is your having problems with getting him tto take a bottle...and make sure he's having at least 3 wet diapers a day.

    Sorry that got so long!

  • Oh yeah, I agree with jmccall - the saline spray is MUCH better.  When I spray their nostrils and sit them up some snot trickles out just from sitting them up.  They hate the spray but it's so much quicker and easier to do then the drops and I think the force of the spray helps to loosen things more.  I use the spray, sit them up, lay them back down, then use the NoseFrida.

  • We used a vaporizer in Aria's room when she was stuffy. It helped her SO much. Smile I hope Ben is feeling better soon!

  • Our routine is Johnson's Vapor Bath, Vick's baby rub on feet and chest, Motrin if he's really fussy, saline and nosefrida, and turn on the humidifier.

Hmm....interesting!  The bottle we have can be used as drops or spray depending on how you hold it.  I thought with babies you had to use the drops because they don't know how to suck in the spray, so it doesn't get in as far to break up the congestion.

This except we only put the baby Vicks on his feet and cover them with socks. He HATES the saline spray and nose frida, but they work wonders!

  • The Spray is an actual spray...it sprays it up their nose.  Think of it like a can of lysol if you will, when you spray it, it sends the mist out into the air.  If you were to 'spray' the spray nasal spray just in the air, it would look the same way.  So, when you spray it up their nose, it's getting up in there as opposed to the drops where it may not get where it needs to be.

  • We've done the saline nasal spray which have worked wonders, the steam from the shower and Advil because it can help with the swelling of the sinuses. Poor DD has had back to back colds this month, it's been horrible!

Hope your LO feels better soon!
