Elyse v. Elise

I know Elise is the popular spelling but it will be a fairly unusual name in my geographic location (no matter the spelling), so I am worried people will not know how to pronounce "Elise".  Elyse strikes as having only one sensible pronunciation.  So, do I risk having people misspell it or risk having them mispronounce it?

Re: Elyse v. Elise

  • I think Elise is the prettier spelling, I'm not a big fan of the "y".  As it stands though, I think the pronounciation is clear.

Not to add to the confusion, but I have a friend who spells it Elese.

  • I like it Elise better than Elyse.  When I look at Elyse it looks like it is spelled wrong and that bothers me LOL.

I think Elyse looks like EE-Lie-ss.

Elise.  I always prefer names spelled correctly and I hate the random Y trend.

    This.

All of this. Go with Elise.

  • I would mispronounce Elyse before I'd mispronounce Elise. If that makes sense. So I vote Elise.

    Elyse

This. I grew up with an Elyse, so it doesn't seem too "trying to be different" with the "y". To me at least.GL

  • It looks like I am in the minority here but I like the spelling Elyse a lot better.  It just looks prettier and more elegant to me.

  • Thanks for the input.  Sorry to be redundant.  I actually just was doing some work involving a woman in her mid 50s named "Mary Elyse".  When I saw the name, I didn't question the pronunciation at all.  Rather, I thought Elyse may have been the more traditional spelling because of the woman's age.  (Though looking at the name origin from here on the bump, I see that they consider Elyse an Americanized version of the French 'Elise'.)  I never thought of if as trying to be trendy by using a 'y' - but I can definitely see why people would think that and perhaps roll their eyes.  Thanks again!

  • As someone with this name, trust me, no matter how it is spelled people will come up with their own pronunciation. I like Elyse better than Elise. My name is Ilyse (that's ilyse).. weird I know.

  • I still think Elise is the way to go.
