gagging and vomiting...

I know you guys read before where I have tried give Reece people food but he gags.. I get that is normal, but it seems like even level 3 purees (sprout) make him gag and vomit, and I mean full projectile vomit!!  These level 3's are more textured than most level 3's but It sucks, I want him to learn to eat textured food, but he still can't! I go for his 9 month appointment in December and I will ask his Dr. but I am really starting to worry about his gag reflex. Anyone else going through this?

Re: gagging and vomiting...

  • Have you tried any really soft cooked foods and let him feed himself?  Maybe because he always expects something smooth from the spoon that you give him the chunkiness and texture catch him off guard.

If he were to pick up the food he would probably have an idea of the texture.  Does he chew on toys or blankets?  Does he gag on those??

  • The girls are very weird in what they'll eat.  They will eat thick level 3 purees and ones with chunks of carrots but anything with pasta they usually gag and throw up.  We went out to dinner the other night with them and gave them bits of chicken, bread, and mashed potatoes and they ate it all fine, but then my dad cut a macaroni in half and gave it to Olivia and she started gagging.  Even a jar of level 3 food that had tiny balls of pasta in it made them gag and they spit it back out.  They did the same thing with a level 3 jar of fruit that had some chunks 2 weeks ago, but yesterday they ate that well.  Since they eat most stuff okay I'm not really worried about it.  We just keep trying to introduce new things and anything they don't like we make note of and try again in a few weeks.

We have tried soft food and he attempts to feed himself but just crumbles it in his palm and tries to eat his fist, thus, not getting the food in his mouth. You are probably right about the textures with the spoon however he ate small pieces of potato and venison burger off a spoon and did ok, but it was super super fine.  He doesn't gag when he chews on his toys or blankets.

If that's the case I'm guessing that those purees with chunks just surprise him and maybe you should try a cheerio or even feeding him a piece of banana. That way he won't be surprised by the hidden chunks inside his purees. I bet if we were eating a smooth soup and then slurped up a piece of chicken unexpectedly we would gag as well. I think if the item starts out with texture or chunks and not mixed with a puree he may do better. Although I'm not a doctor so just take it for what it's worth. LOL

  • G won't eat those pured either but will eat small pieces of food. I used to have to put them in his mouth while he held some in his hands which he would try and eat. I think he just didnt like the texture of the baby food. Maybe try something like that.
  • Try a graham cracker.

  • A graham cracker? He has 8 teeth, all in front.... wouldn't he bite it off and choke on a huge chunk? Can you tell I am paranoid???

  • Nah.  The girls have two bottom teeth and two just starting to come in on top and they've had crackers and all kinds of stuff.  You could break it into pieces and put it on his tray if you want and see if he'll feed himself.  But they're a little sweet, so he might like it and get more on board with the whole idea.

Have you tried mum mum's?  Those were one of the first things we gave the girls and they still love them.

  • Ava has no teeth still and data graham crackers like a pro, we have never had issues with her buying off too big of a piece. they are probably her favorite snack right new.

  • I've come across a lot of kids who gag on those stage 3 foods.  Especially if they didn't start things with all different textures early on.  I would stick with stage 2 and finger foods if it were me.  It can take them awhile to get used to eating new things.  Just take it slowly, keep offering different things, and fill him up with stage 2 if he's hungry.

  • Get the graham crackers in the red nabisco box (no honey). The crackers are in fourths, give him one fourth this is how we started with finger food. The cracker actually dissolves much faster than you'd think. Once he mastered that he was ready for puffs
