Resume question

DH is a teacher and is applying for a principalship in the same district.  Since he hasn't applied since getting his teaching job 7 years ago, is it still considered current practice to state an objective at the top of the resume?

When we were in college (8 years ago!) it was a must for teachers.  I'm wondering if the same still applies or if the rules have changed and it will look outdated.

Anyone?

Re: Resume question

  • Hmmm...haven't seen resume's for 4 years...but they still had an objective at the top.

  • It's about 50/50 that I see an objective on resumes anymore. my opinion, if you're applying for a particular job the objective is rather obvious. Martin Yate has some "Knock 'Em Dead" books for resumes, cover letters, and interviews that are OUTSTANDING - highly recommend. Probably helped me get $10K more in my salary than was initially slated for the position. this was a few years ago - I suspect there are more recent versions out now.  Probably worth a trip to the book store to check out.
  • Every website that I go to to research this subject says no, do not put an objective at the top but rather a summary of skills/qualifications.
  • Hmmm...thanks for the opinions!  I always thought that objectives were weird, considering you put a cover letter with everything.  I'll check out some sights and maybe that book too.
  • One of the best things he can do is to take a look at the job description and then put bullet points outlining his skills that directly relate to the job description.  Keep it short, no more than 2 columns of 4 points.  The goal is to have the reader decide that he is perfect for the job before reading anything else on the resume.  Good luck!
