F/U Finger Foods

For those of you who are giving your LO's' table food, how many teeth do they have? DS only has his front two teeth, so I'm scared to give him much because I'm afraid he'll choke (he choked on an apple skin and threw up last week).

He will gnaw on peeled apples and peaches (see above for why peeled), and he has gummed grapes but will spit them out. I've tried grated cheese and rice, and he makes this horrible face like he is gagging and then spits them out. He seems to have very little interest outside of puffs and mum mums.

Re: F/U Finger Foods

  • Jackson has 2 teeth. He was eating table food before he had teeth though. He prefers solids over purees. Just keep trying different foods here and there. I feel like having him eat at the same time as us helped. He could see the motion of putting food in the mouth and the chewing motion. I would suggest starting with softer foods such as bananas and avocado and go from there.

  • Lucia started with no teeth, and now has her 2 bottom. I think it helped her to start with things in strips, because she could put them in, then pull out, and just slobber on them til they pretty much dissolved. Like a piece of french toast. Now we pretty much only do bites because she gets how to put the food all the way in her mouth, and started shoving in the whole big strip.

  • J has 7 teeth. He still does most of his chewing in the back where his molars will be, though.

  • Well, you don't chew with your front teeth, so number of teeth doesn't really prevent choking. Give soft things that you can mush up between your tongue and the roof of your mouth. Also, gagging is not choking. Gagging is a learning tool to help them figure out what is too big so that they won't choke. Don't freak out about gagging.

  • DS is a gummy bear still but will eat everything we give him! He eats things from steamed veggies to pieces of meat I cut up for him! Like fredpuma said don't let the gagging scare you, if your lo is starting to eat the gagging reflex is normal as they are getting used to eating!

DS always chews his food with his front teeth since that's all he has. With that said, he has 6 teeth (4 top, 2 bottom) and still gags all the time. He always coughs it up very quickly, and the pieces are always pea sized, so I am not too worried about it. Keep in mind his face still turns red, but it is because he is coughing not because he can't breath. It's still scary when he does it, but when they are choking they aren't coughing, they are gasping for air.
