Diluting Juice

Hello. I am a SAHM of a 4 mo old and I have a 3 year old stepson whom I watch during the week (while his mom works and to avoid daycare expenses).  We have been diluting his juice since he's been old enough to have juice.  I guess I don't even know why we dilute it, just that my mom always did, so I do.  My question is, in your opinion, when do you stop diluting juice?  Or, when do you change the ratio (right now, we still do half and half)?

Re: Diluting Juice

  • The reasoning behind diluting it is to reduce their sugar intake. DD1 doesn't get juice often, but most of the time it is diluted. She actually asks for "apple juice and water" because she thinks the water is necessary to make the juice :) I don't know when we'll stop diluting it, but probably not for a while yet.

  • Personally I would never stop diluting juice has so much sugar in it and very little fibre which is just is not good for their teeth and diet.
Diluting juice is a great habit and I still do it as an adult also it stretches your budget. The only time I don't bother us when we are using a juice box for travel etc.

I thought so :) but you know how sometimes we realize that we do things without knowing why, its just how it was done... haha

  • I still dilute the juice.  They don't get it daily.  Mostly they drink water or milk.  I haven't thought about when/if I would stop diluting.  I actually still dilute mine when I have OJ or something because I don't like all the sugar.

  • The only juice I dont dilute for DD (27 m) is oj or a juice box when we go out and thats the only option. As long as she gets juice it will be diluted even when she is school aged, for the same reasons as the other mothers...sugar.

I know it's funny when I read this post I thought, "I haven't even stopped diluting my juice yet! :) DD doesn't get juice, but if she did I would continue to dilute it.

  • I still add a little water to most of my juice that I drink! I just want like how strong most juices are. I'm sure I will do the same for DS for quite some time.
  • My kids are 4 and 2, and we still dont give juice. I guess I would keep diluting it for as long as possible since the sugar is so high.
  • No reason to stop... My kids only get it as a treat when we go out to eat sometimes so it isn't diluted then and also if they are constipated....but this summer I did give diluted lemonade bc I like cold lemonade in summer and they wanted to try it...

So pretty much full strength only if out and about.

  • DD rarely gets juice (never at home, usually only when we go out for breakfast or a special occasion at school). It usually isn't diluted but I usually get her OJ. If I were to serve her juice myself I would definitely dilute it probably forever.

I hardly ever drink juice but when I do it is diluted because otherwise it is just too sweet.
