I had my 1st ultrasound and OB appt yesterday and I found out I am having twins! I was so shocked since twins don't run in either of our families. I have a 4 yo and a 2.5 yo. Any advice for the 1st trimester? I finally went on zofran because I was vomiting constantly and losing weight so I feel a bit better but so exhausted and still trying to chase after my 2 boys. Also, I saw 2 heartbeats baby A 156 and baby B 169 but I am now worried about vanishing twin syndrome
If I saw 2 good heartbeats do the chances decrease? Thanks ( I worry alot and now this is double the worry!)
Re: In shock that I am having twins!
welcome and congrats! We also have 2 boys, ages 4 and 2, so I know how tiring it is with this pregnancy and chasing after 2 little boys. I didn't find out until the 20 week u/s that we were having twins. I think I'm still surprised. Twins don't run in my family either (I read it's from the mother's side).
Advice for the 1st trimester and pregnancy - get help. I have been tired throughout this whole pregnancy. I was never even remotely this tired w/my 1st 2 pregnancies. I also had horrible nausea until 20 weeks (but I also had this w/my 1st 2). Also, this board is great and I've learned a lot. Everyone is so friendly and helpful.
Just like with any other pregnancy, once the heartbeat is seen your chances of miscarriage or vanishing twin decrease.
I definitely recommend listening to your body. This is harder with two other children but get your SO/DH/Partner on board for this. My first tri was miserable with m/s and zofran also allowed me to feel human.
Congrats momma!

First of all, congrats!! I was in shock too, and we did IVF. Just listen to your body and try to keep some food down.
Just like with singleton pregnancies, the chances of miscarriage does decrease once you see a heartbeat. Unfortunately, carrying twins does have a higher risk of loss. Try not to focus on that (I know, it's hard). Again, congrats!

They didn't say whether they were in 2 sacs or not but looking at the ultraound it looks like 2 distinct sacs. not sure about the placenta.....does that mean they are fraternal if the are not in the same sac?
If they are not in the same sac they are likely fraternal, but there is a chance they could still be identical.
Like everyone else said, the best thing you can do is listen to your body. Congratulations!!!
Congratulations! We had complete surprise twins, too, so I definitely understand the shock.
These were my first, so I didn't have to deal with two other little ones, but I definitely recommend getting as much help as you can so you can rest. I was completely wiped out and all I did was go to my office job every day.
This board is great - you'll learn so much here!
