Interesting facts about the U.S. Presidents

I was milling around online and came across some interesting facts about our presidents. I was reading an article that stated Romney could win the popular vote but lose the election. Which has only happened 4 times in history. I did not know this.

"Most liked Presidents" This list seems pretty predictable

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_rankings_of_Presidents_of_the_United_States

George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin D. Roosevelt are consistently ranked at the top of the lists. Often ranked just below those Presidents are Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt. The remaining places in the top ten are often rounded out by Harry S Truman, Woodrow Wilson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Andrew Jackson. The bottom ten often include Warren G. Harding, James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Franklin Pierce, Millard Fillmore, Ulysses S. Grant, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and George W. Bush

Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000. ::sigh::

Yes, and he didn't win the election.

  • 4 times in history?  Isn't that almost 10% of presidential elections?  Good grief, we need a better system than the electoral college.

Four candidates won the popular vote but lost the presidency: Andrew Jackson won the popular vote but lost the election to John Quincy Adams (1824); Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote but lost the election to Rutherford B. Hayes (1876); Grover Cleveland won the popular vote but lost the election to Benjamin Harrison (1888); Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the election to George W. Bush (2000).

  • Lurking history teacher here...

Two of those cases were ties that had to be decided in the House of Representatives.

It was actually back room deals that got JQA and Rutherfraud B Hayes the presidency.

Yea, our system is really not that democratic...

It could very well happen to Romney this election. Will you still be against the EC if Obama loses the popular vote but wins the election? Or only if the reverse happens, which is also a distinct possibility.
I'm against it no matter who wins.  Really truly.

Yup.  I've said in several posts that I will not be happy if Obama wins but Romney gets more votes.  I may not like Romney, but I *do* like a fair election system.
