TTC after 35

Defeated

Today my DH and I had a follow up consult with our RE regarding all of our testing.  Basically she went over all our results and all of my testing came back excellent.  Unfortunately, my husbands SA is horrible.  She basically explained that we can do IUI's but the likelihood of us conceiving would only be about 10% with his counts.  RE explained our best option is IVF with ICSI and that would increase our chances to a 50% success rate.  She wants DH to see a urologist and see if he can suggest anything else or come up with a solution.  Of course our insurance covers nothing so we will be completely OOP.  I don't know any other way to describe how I feel other than feeling defeated :(
Photobucket Me:36 DH: 34 TTC since 02/2012, not preventing since 2010. Me: testing came back good. DH: dx: MIF low count/motility. RE recommends IVF with ICSI. Update: DH just diagnosed with severe Crohn's disease, so any IF treatment is on hold :(

Re: Defeated

  • I am sorry; that stinks.

Maybe the silver lining is you won't waste time & money on IUI? I've definitely read posts from people stating that their REs wish they could skip IUIs and move right to IVF because of the success rates.

  • Your results sound EXACTLY like what happened when I went for MY results.  I was fine and dh was not.  She said IUI would be a waste of time and we would need IVF with ICSI.  It was like a kick in the stomach.  I am so sorry.  :(

  • I'm so sorry. It's a big blow to absorb and will take some time to get used to. We were in the same position, though now my age makes even IVF with ICSI low probability. A possible silver lining is now you don't have to go through the futile hoping every month. My advice is, if you are open to IVF, don't wait.
  • Wow. I am sorry. I am going for results Monday although I have been getting them all along so the only surprise will be the recommendation. If it's IVF then...we're probably done because we just don't have the money. I certainly feel for you.
Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.
  • Thank you for your support and feedback!  I think I just need some time to take it all in.

  • I'm sorry.  Bad news about fertility is incredibly tough at first, but I've seen tons of great outcomes on these boards with MFI.  (And honestly your husband's results don't seem too terrible if your doc gives you a 10% chance of conceiving with IUI -- those are good odds compared to some I've seen on here.)  To do IVF you may be able to find a clinical study in your area, or a clinic with a good financing program, or even family support.  Or you may be able to boost his counts -- anything obvious to address like smoking, heavy drinking, poor diet?  Good luck.

  • I wish I was able to pinpoint it to something.  He has no medical problems, doesn't smoke or drink and eats pretty well.  The only thing is that he use to keep his laptop on his lap, that has stopped now.

  • Not to question your doc, but I assume the terrible results are an avg of several sa? Dh first was horrible but got better...all depends on what was happening 3 months ago!
I am sorry to hear of it, hopefully clomid or vitamins will.help
