How/where do you start with maternity leave/FMLA info?

I have no idea when/how/where I start with all this stuff.  I asked my work long before I got pregnant what maternity leave policy is, but I don't really remember what it all is.  Of course, I know to ask them, when I am ready, but...what else?  Thanks.

  • You are extreamily early.

You can't apply for SDI until after you have the baby, and FMLA paperwork can be filled out only like a month before you go out.

    Chill and enjoy your pregnancy.

  • I made an appt with HR around 18-20 weeks to understand my options. I'm planning on another meeting around 30 weeks to finalize things and fill out forms.

  • Your company is really the only one that can help with getting started.  Your STD coverage demends on your employer.
  • It is WAY confusing, and it was like pulling teeth for me to get HR to go over the policy with me.  I finally got them to talk to me at 20 weeks.  Obviously, varies widely by company, but here's what I was told:

4 weeks before your due date, you can get SDI.  The standard is 2 weeks before, but your OB can write you a note for 4 weeks (and most will without any questions)

6 weeks after baby is born, you get SDI (8 weeks if you have a c-section)

After SDI runs out, you are eligible for 6 weeks of Paid Family Leave (PFL amount is equal to SDI).

After PFL runs out, you are eligible for 6 weeks of unpaid family leave.

Anything additional is usually vacation time, unless your employer offers more.
