I had an entire shelf in the freezer filled with ziploc baggies of Sophie's food - purees I had made then frozen in ice cube trays, then transferred to the bags.
During the storm we lost power for about 36-48 hours (not sure exactly - we were at my folks' house and didn't come back until we heard through the grapevine that the lights were on). We made sure to fill the freezer with bags of water long before the storm hit so that they would freeze and hopefully help retain some of the cold. When we came back, everything was still frozen (obviously, since the power had been on for a few hours). The puree cubes were still cubed - maybe they never melted?
I'm obviously going to taste a couple of the purees myself, but I'm wondering what you guys think. Do you think the food is still good? Or should I toss them all and start over? It would be inconvenient, but certainly not the end of the world...
Re: Is it still good?
If it looks like it stayed frozen, I'd say you're good. Most fridges are designed to keep things cold for about as long as you didn't have power. I think your instincts are right- taste it first, but if it tastes OK, I'd probably save it.
The only exception might be meats- I might throw those away just to be safe. But I am really grossed out by old meat, even when the fridge is working.
Personally, I am just glad we got our frozen breastmilk into someone else's freezer. We are on hour 62 of no power. Our fridge is a lost cause.
I also say that if the ice was still in "cube" form then they never defrosted and you're still good.
