Pumping - Introducing the First Bottle?

Pumping - Introducing the First Bottle?

I've read in a few sources that the best time to offer the first bottle of pumped breast milk is between weeks 4 and 6.  I'm curious from those who've gone before:  do you agree?  Would you lean more toward the earlier/later end of the spectrum?  We are planning to try next week, so that I might be able to go to a bridal shower a couple weekends from now and my husband would be able to feed Eddie while I'm gone.  TIA!

Re: Pumping - Introducing the First Bottle?

  • I recommend trying at 4 weeks and seeing how he takes the bottle and whether or not it affects his nursing at all. If he takes it well AND transitions easily between bottle and breast, great! If he doesn't take the breast as readily once given a bottle, I would hold off for a few days to a week and try again.

Remember to use the slowest flow nipple available regardless of his age. Om+ should meet his needs for as long as you want to nurse him. It will help him prefer the breast over the bottle.

We waited too long, in my opinion, to introduce a bottle. It was my fault...I was in denial about having to return to work (the thought of it made me feel sick). We introduced it at 10 weeks and he never took it easily, but would hold off until I was home and reverse-cycle. You're doing it right! :)

  • We were advised to try at 4 weeks and for it to be DH to give him the bottle and for me to leave the room. This way it gets LO used to others feeding him.

  • 4 weeks here also and I was no where to be seen or heard from.  I also started with really small ounces and just to get her used to it, but not prefer it. While I was on maternity leave for the last 4 weeks she was having a bottle a day, but it was like 0.5 to 1.5 oz and then she would nurse afterwards.
