need help with potty training a capable kid

My son has been displaying the signs for almost a year (with some of them including telling me when he needed to go sometimes or tell me right afterwards.)  I've tried off and on but don't want to force him.  Over the summer I'd leave him naked and I'd find him on the potty pooping and he also would pee at school. 

Now he won't do anything at home or school except for a  couple of weeks ago he peed on the potty with DH but didn't tell anyone.

Yesterday I decided to keep his pull up off and he didn't do anything for over five hours and then as soon as I put a diaper on (within minutes) he peed.   So I know he can hold it b/c looking back there were many days long ago that he would do this. 

I've tried bribing him, taking him to the potty every so often, big boy undies, videos, book, ect.  nothing has helped.  Being naked has been the best but now it's getting cold and he won't wear his baby legs anymore so I'd like to start pushing it a bit harder.

When I put underwear on him he thinks he can pee in it and will continue to pee until I get frustrated and put a diaper on him or let him be naked.

Any ideas??? (we avg between 10+ diapers a day since he HATES to be wet or dirty.)

Is he afraid? Does he show any signs of fear?

My DD didn't PT until 3 years, 9 months even though she showed signs of readiness for 2 years before then. She had a very strong fear of releasing her pee and poop into the potty, though. Some kids are afraid they're losing something, we were told by the child psych we consulted.

When you leave his Pull-Up off, I'd wait until you can see he visibly has to go, and then try him on the potty... when we'd do that, DD would FREAK! But put a diaper on her and she'd totally fill it. When she didn't have to go pee or poop, though, she'd sit on the potty all the time.

Can you think of any negative experiences he might have had to make him no longer want to use the toilet? Fall in the toilet? Fall off the toilet? A toilet flush while he was still on it? Just thinking out loud...

I just basically typed out our potty training situation in the post below.  I'm happy to answer any questions.

I might try leaving him in his wet underwear for a few minutes, just not rushing to change him, if he hates being wet or dirty.

so right after I posted this I heard his potty that talks and sings and went to spy on him.  He sat there and went pee. I asked him when he got up if he peed since he put the lid down and I couldn't see and he said no...he did and we did a pee pee in the potty dance and got a lolly...hopefully he'll do it again.

Yeah, good for him!  I have found with DS that he does not consistently come to me when he needs to go nor does he consistently respond with a yes when I ask, even though he needs to go.  It certainly takes a lot of patience and trying to read your child!  Good luck! Bump up the heat and keep him naked for a few days?  Seriously, we did it in a week with DD#1.  It was summer so it was easier, but we just kept her naked all day (except at naps and night).  It took about three days before we were having no accidents.  Then it took another few months of her pooping at naptime b/c she didn't want to in the potty before I stopped putting a pull-up on her at naptime.  Now she even does over nights without a pull up.
