Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When do LO's use their arms during tummy time?

When did your LO's start using their arms more during tummy time to prop their bodies up?

DS tends to keep his arms back when he's on his belly and just arches his back up to keep his head and legs up. lol He looks like an airplane! He's got a great, strong back because of it, but I keep trying to move his arms under him to help prop him up and to hopefully "show" him that it helps, but they go right back down by his sides.

Just curious when they tend to learn to do this on their own...

TIA

Re: When do LO's use their arms during tummy time?

  • DS has never not used his arms during tummy time. He just started straightening them and pushing up on his hands, where he used to just prop himself up on his forearms. But even when he was just weeks old he always had his arms under his chest.

Maybe try putting a couple interesting or new toys in front of him to get him trying to reach for them?

  • He keeps his arms in front of him when he is on the boppy, just not when laying flat. And I do put new toys infront of him! haha he just keeps his arms by his side!

    Thanks :)

  • OMG!!! Your LOis so super duper adorable!! Love his costume too!

My DS started to use his arms a little just recently, probably around 4 months. But each baby is different, some baby's dont roll until 6 months so it all depends!

  • My ds had finally figured out how to move his arms out in front of him to prop himself up...and then he stopped. Now he has them at his sides and is "swimming." Even if I move his arms in front of him now, he just moves them back to his sides. I read somewhere it's a movement in preparation of crawling but it just frustrates him, lol.

  • DD started around 3-3 1/2 months, but everyone is different! I wouldn't worry about it :)

  • Do your babies use one arm more than the other? DS lifts higher with his right than his left which he doesn't seem to like as much (we know there's no physical reason. Just seems to be a preference) he has rolled both ways since 3 months actual so he can use both.
