Bear with me ladies - A CCseat question.

Alright, I've been doing my research and I was all set to get the Graco MyRide 65. Well, Target is having a 2 week baby sale and I was checking out the price when I found the Safety 1st Complete Air Convertible seat. I looked up the reviews and over all it seems to be a good seat. I really like the air wings to help protect in side collisions. Does anyone have one?

The reason I'm considering the switch is that Eli doesn't like to recline in his seat anymore. He gets irritated and fussy if he's in it too long. From what I can tell the Safety 1st looks to sit more upright than the Graco. But, the downside it that the Safety 1st has a FF limit of 50lbs, while the Graco is 65. (RF is the same at 40lbs) Eli is tiny at 17lbs at his 9 month appointment, so is the 15lbs that huge of a deal when he's small anyway?

Thoughts, opinions? Does anyone have a different seat that they like? I had 0 problems picking out an infant seat, why is this decision so much harder?

Edit: Typos

  • The girls are also small and I figure by the time they're 50 pounds they will be at an age where they're going to want to be in a booster seat instead of a car seat, or where the car seat will reach it's expiration date anyway. We're really happy with the Safety First seats and they seem really comfortable in them.

That's where my thoughts were going. Thanks for the input!  If you don't mind me asking, what were there sizes at their last appointments?

  • 50 lbs is the weight of an early elem school student. He will be in a booster or high back booster by then.

I just looked in my oldest kid's baby book and he was 49 lbs at age 5 and he has always been in the 75%-99% or higher for weight.

  • We have the Safety 1st Complete Air. I'm pretty sure ours goes to 65lbs though.
I love it and I agree that going to 50lbs should be fine.

I can let you know tomorrow what their official 9 month weights are.  Due to switching pediatricians that's the earliest they could get us in.  At 6 months they were only 14lbs 2oz and 13lbs 10oz.  They're still solidly in 3-6 month clothes so I'm thinking there hasn't been a crazy growth spurt since then.

  • This is the one that I have, and I guess it goes up to 65 pounds FF.  I didn't see any that only go up to 50 pounds.  This one only goes up to 50 pounds as FF, but at that point it converts to a booster up to 100 pounds (which is awesome, mine doesn't so we'll have to buy boosters, though I wonder if expiration dates will be a concern at that point).

I wonder if at some point cars like minivans will come with (or have the option to) boosters that are built into the seat and somehow pop out of the seat if you want.  With all of these recommendations to have kids in car seats and boosters for so long it seems like that would be very practical so that when kids have play dates you're not worried about how they're going to be driven around.

  • Concerning the weight limit for FF- there's also a height limit too, right? Think about his length too, he might outgrow that parameter first anyway.

I personally wouldn't worry about a 15 lb difference in the limit, especially if he's small. If it becomes a problem down the road, it's fixable and I'd just go for it if you like that seat better.

The one that Jen has is the same one my mom has for my cousin's son (she babysits).  My cousin researched carseats for literally a month straight (dailly) before deciding on which ones she wanted.  She has the Britax for her car, but she got the Safety 1st one for her husband's car and my mom's car.  Finn seems really comfortable in the carseat...he's a big boy, and he's 2.5 and 35 lbs.  I think it would be fine.

This is the one I was looking at. It's not the Air 65, just the regular Air. I didn't see this one on the BRU website. Either way, thanks everyone for the info! I think I'm going to go ahead and get the Safety 1st over the Graco.
