pumping & telling employer?

I had to get a part time job..so it's new.  I'm going in today because they offered me the job and I'm supposed to go in and get the details about it and accept/decline the offer.  LO is 8 weeks.  The first 6 weeks I pumped and did bottles, and then for the last 2 weeks I've been EBFing...because that was my ultimate goal.  It's unfortunate that just as I start EBFing I get a job offer (details below if interested).

But if I do decide to take the job...I'm interested to know how I broach that I'll need some breaks to pump while I work.  Anyone have experience with this?

Unnecessary details: My husband got a part-time job recently and we need to supplement those hours so that we get enough money as if one of us has a full-time job.  I think my husband should have found a second job to supplement his other hours (which are only like 16 hours/week), but I applied to jobs too, and I was offered a job before he has gotten any further offers.

Re: pumping & telling employer?

  • I believe by law they have to give you a place and time to pump.  That could just be Florida though... Hopefully its not just Florida.  Anyway, just let him know you're still nursing your baby and you would need a place to and a couple times a day to pump.  It takes me about 30 minutes each session because of set up, pump time (about 10 minutes) and then clean up of the parts, and then putting everything including the milk away.

  • I have to go through this every day. I just say,"I have a newborn, so I'll need to take a 45 minute break because I have to pump and it takes awhile." Everyone has been understanding. We get 45 on my floor anyways, but on the other floors they only take 30. I haven't had any problems and if anyone were to give me one, I'd say exactly what Latin said...it's illegal for you to not let me pump.

  • I know I am not well versed on the topic, but I know when I worked pt through college, there were different labor laws than for full timers because the shift lengths were shorter. I would take a look into your local labor laws. Depending on your shift length is what I would say, you said something about 16 hrs weekly, and if that is done on 4 seperate 4 hour shifts at least in Indiana you were only entitled to one 15 minute break. I dunno, I am just not sure part time and full time jobs work the same way.

  • I live in the same area as latnprincess so I know the same info as her. When I went back to work they already assumed I needed to pump, and figures it out before I came back. I get as much time as I need, as often as I need. I just tell my chefs I need to go in the office, and I don't have to explain anything to my coworkers. Nobody is allowed to harass me about it.

Just bring it up when you go in. Tell them youll need place, and time, and also a place to store the milk.

In MA, your employer needs to provide you with a place to pump and allow pumping breaks throughout the day, but they do not need to pay you for that time.  Google pumping laws by state.

Just for the record, that law only applies to companies with 50 employees or more. I would not throw legal in unless you are sure the law protects that. If they have an HR department, talk to them.

Yeah I agree, you don't have to bring up the law unless they say absolutely NO.  Hopefully you guys can work something out.  Like I said just let them know you are still nursing your child and would like a place to pump and some time.

  • My FT job was understanding- I am a teacher so they just gave me a prep period around the time I need to release. (principal that does schedules is a father to 8 children-he understood and had more knowledge about pumping then i did at that time) and told me the designated places

my PT job i have worked at forever, with my bosses forever too... so even though my manager is a man (im a supervisor) i told him straight out- i need time and a place to pump since i am breastfeeding.  he said that was fine as long as i was returning to work- they were scared i was going to quit LOL!!- i only work 4 hrs at a time so far- and it takes me about 20-22 minutes to pump -just a little longer then my 15min break-but they are fine with it!
