Ortho Evra (the patch) anyone?

So after baby I was sticking with the pill only because it was the only option that we could afford (that worked for us).  Normally we have to pay all prescriptions out of pocket until we meet our deductible...but I just noticed now we don't have to pay for any contraceptive methods (Obama's law I'm guessing?).

Now that I have more options I'd like to try the patch.  I have a hard time remember my pill- DS is proof of that heehee :).  What's been your experience?

Re: Ortho Evra (the patch) anyone?

  • Hated the patch, I was on it for a bit during college.

I developed something called erythema nodosum b/c of it. It looks scary but it's not that big of a deal, besides being kind of painful. It went away within a few weeks of stopping the patch.

I've also since heard there is an increased risk of blood clots with the patch vs. other types of BCs.

Have you thought about an IUD or the Nuva Ring?

  • My Obgyn did not recommend the patch, because of the increased risk of blood clots. I had an IUD, but got it removed after some issues, so now the pill is what's working for us now.

  • I was on the patch from 2004-2011.  No real complaints, it was easy enough to use and caused no side effects.  I will say that both times I TTC, I had a m/c my first cycle off the patch.  My Dr. could never say that the patch is what caused them, but it still makes me nervous.  I just went back on birth control a few months ago and the patch is now $98/month for me (used to be $67 before I had DD2) - so Obama's free b/c thing is a joke.  I switched to the nuva ring and so far I like it a lot more.

  • I used the patch about 6 or 7 years ago and was on it for probably about a year.  I did not like it at all.  It really irritated my skin and never stayed on that great.  Since my girls were born I have just been sticking with the pill.

  • The patch was ok for a while then it made me itchy. Stay away from the shots they make you gain slot of weight. I did an iud and no prob and the best it's good for 510 yrs. Talk to your doctor about all kinds of birth control and then you see what's best for you
  • As of Aug birth control is covered. I haven't tried the patch but i've heard some negatives about it like increased risk of clots. I also always saw them on bathroom stalls in the college bar's (ewwww)
  • I absolutely loved the patch.  I was on it for years and never had issues.  I practically begged my doctor for it again but she won't prescribe it anymore because of the blood clotting issue.  High school aged athletic girls were dying of heart attacks from it.  So now I'm on depo and I like it well enough.  Only have to have it done once every 3 months.
