Lanolized wool feeling sticky?

Hello!

My husband and I decided to lanolize our wool covers yesterday in preparation for little Felix's arrival.  This is our first time so we watched a few youtube videos before we started.  Everything seemed to go perfectly, but now a day later and these covers feel awful - super sticky and tacky feeling.  Feeling it on my own skin feels gross, I can't imagine using these on a newborn.

Here is what our process was:

1.5 Tablespoons of lanolin in 2 cups of boiling water with a few drops of baby wash. We added it to the sink which had about 2 gallons of room temperature water in it. We let the covers soak for 30 minutes, then lightly squeezed the water out, rolled in towels, and laid flat to dry.   We did 3 covers and 1 pair of longies.

Did we use too much lanolin perhaps?  I've read that it does have some greasy feeling to it, but this just feels awful to the touch.

Advice and suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

  • I think you added too much lanolin to the water. The most lanolin I've ever read to use is 1tsp, but most tutorials will say about a pea sized amount.

I would rewash the cover and see if that will help get rid of some of that lanolin.

Here is a tutorial that a lot of us here use:  https://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/lanolize.htm

It's not going to hurt anything, I wouldn't rewash. It will last longer until you need to lanolize again, and it will also moisturize your LOs skin. You could just try working it in with your hands more if it really bothers you. It'll be moisturizing for you as we'll. ETA the pea sized amount is for solid lanolin. We have always needed more. It sounds like you're using liquid lanolin, so you'll use much more. And since you had so many woollies in the sink you'll use even more.

    Thank you very much!
