Re: How many naps?

  • I think each is different... my LO is almost 11 months and depending how well he sleeps at night, he'll have 2 or 3... occasionally one, which makes for a long day for me lol.

  • DS has been on one 2 hour nap a day since he was 8 months. He wakes around 9am give or take 30-60 mins and goes to sleep at 9pm.

  • She transitioned herself down to one 2-3 hour nap a day about a month ago.  She sleeps 12+ hours at night.

  • My DS transitioned to 1 right at a year. MyDD still takes 2 and is no where near ready to drop 1. Even with 2, she goes to bed between 630-7

  • DS usually takes 2 a day. Of course, today he only took one. Hope that was a fluke!

  • DD takes 2 - one mid morning, one early afternoon.  At home they each last 60-90 minutes, at daycare they're only 45ish minutes each, but she still only takes 2.  She sleeps 630p-630a.

  • My understanding is most babies this age should take two naps. I'm not telling anyone what to do and of course all, babies are different. I'm a Weissbluth fan (national sleep specialists/researcher, author "healthy sleep habits, happy child.") and he writes that 83% of babies this age still take two naps. If they don't , ey may adjust, but then they learn to be over tired babies.

My guy does two naps, about 1hr 15 each. But actually, this week on two different days, he really resisted his afternoon nap. I think this was because he was very constipated and later had massive poops-- but for a moment I thought he might be shifting. I have no idea how you know when it's a real shift. I dread that process!!

I'm going to continue to try for two naps each day til at least 15 mths (another Weissbluth rec) or untl it becomes really clear he won't do them. It became very clear when he dropped his third nap back in month 7. I understand they usually drop the morning nap first and if they drop the afternoon one, you need to put them to bed a little bit earlier in hope that they'll sleep later in the morning and last til the afternoon nap. You have to kind of train them into losing the am nap and not the pm nap.

My husband would say do whatever it seems your baby needs. I'm a bit more about research based advice-- I guess bc sometimes I just don't know if I can really tell what the little guy needs!!

  • research is great, but some babies are going to do what they want regardless of what you've read.  Research also says that naps should last longer than 30 minutes, but my DD rarely naps longer than 30-45 at daycare no matter what they do.  She sleeps just fine otherwise so I'm not concerned.

  • Each baby is different but my LO's depend on how much he slept that night.

He is usually in bed around 7:30 but his wake up times vary by a few hours. Sometimes I can get him to take a bottle when he's up around 6 am and then he goes back to sleep until almost 10 am. So obviously he would only need 1 nap on those days. On days where the bottle trick doesn't work, then it's two. I tend to follow his cues rather than have him on a set napping schedule.

  • DD is still at two naps a day. We are on the 2-3-4 schedule and I don't see it changing any time soon because each nap is still around two hours each. She goes to bed around 7-7:30 and wakes around 6:30-7.

  • I agree that all babies are different, but mine is still doing 2 naps/day at 11 months. They  usually last 1-2 hours (typically closer to 1).
  • my LO is 10.5 months and takes two a day. occasionally he will only take one long nap at the babysitter's (2-3 hours) but even then he'll often catnap on the drive home. if his naps are short he might take 3.
