I'm currently working full time at a job I can't stand. Right before I found out I was pregnant I was going to change jobs, however, found out I was pregnant and didn't want to have to worry about time off for appointments and medical benefits.
My dilemma now is, my hubby is starting a new career as we speak and its a union job with great benefits so after baby is born I won't have to worry about medical benefits for me or her. So that puts my mind at ease. I do plan on working full time after she is born (not right after, but a few months at the most) and I can come back to work where I am now and work part time. I really want out of this job though. Just wondering if there are any other moms out there either FTM or STM that are or have been in the same situation, and what did you do/plan on doing? When did you start to look for part time work? Before or after having the baby?
I know this comes down to a personal decision on whats best for us, however I just need some advice on the situation.
Thanks ![]()
Re: Want to know some opinions
I am a FTM, but here's my advice...
If I understood correctly, you want a new job, but you are not sure if you should start looking for one now or if you should wait until your maternity leave to look. The advantage of your current job is that you would not *have to* work full time, and you don't want to give up a part-time position you may need in the future, but you still really want out. Is that right?
If so, I would stay where I am until baby comes, but I wouldn't hoard my sick time / vacation time just in case I decided not to come back at all (unless of course my state / employer's rules required them to pay me all my vacation time upon resignation). Then, while out on maternity leave, I'd look for a new job. (Interviews would be a good time to "test drive" your childcare arrangements anyway!) If a new job isn't found before time to return to the old job, I'd go back to work while job hunting. It's waaaaay easier to find a job when you have one that when you don't!
I wouldn't bother to look now, because I know I would never hire someone who will need a few months off shortly after being hired - for whatever reason (baby, personal, whatever). I just wouldn't want to train someone, then train a replacement, and then risk that the person I hired first doesn't ever come back after all... So, interview during your maternity leave, and if you don't find anything, keep looking after you go back to work. Eventually something good will come along!
Happy job hunting!
I have no intentions to go back to my job after I have my baby. They had me so angry the other day, I was two seconds from walking out, then common sense reminded me that very few companies are going to hire a 20 some week pregnant woman.
I am not telling them until after the fact. I have to train a replacement for my position anyways, since I am the only one that knows how to do my job. Plus, I have 5 weeks sick/vacation time. I really need that for maternity leave.
