Babies: 0 - 3 Months

3+ hrs. of crying--ahhhh!

Last night I seriously thought I was going to lose it.  DS was screaming from about 6pm-10 off and on and consistently from 8-10 non-stop.  Nothing was consoling him and DD (3 yrs) started getting upset, my husband was getting frazzled--this phase just sucks!  Anyone else going through the same thing?  I know it's common to experience extended periods of crying but I just hope this doesn't last long!

  • We are going through the exact same thing.  My DS is 5 weeks old and we are having the same issues.  He gets really fussy in the afternoon and his evenings have been just like yours last night.  He will cry/scream for 2 to 3 hours straight.  He will get so close to falling asleep and then just fight it.  I try getting him to fall asleep long before he reaches the overtired stage but nothing works.  The longer he screams and cries the more overtired he gets.   I do the 5 S's but he just keeps fighting it.  I am dreading this evening now because of how this last week has been.  Today has been a pretty rough day already.  I wish I had something positive to share with you.  I hope things get better soon for both of us.  I just want to enjoy my baby but I feel like he is miserable with gas and reflux and all those issues that come with an immature digestive system.

  • I am crying on the couch downstairs as dj tries to get K to sleep. We are on hour three. I got so frustrated during my shift that he had to come relieve me early. This sucks and I am dressing what the night will be like.

  • My ds did this as well until my grandma suggested something brilliant. Bundle him up in a winter clothes, socks, ect and put him in a stroller or carseat outside where you can see him; deck if you have one. My ds passes out within ten minutes. Sometimes a little rocking and shshing but it totally works!! He's been sleeping out there since 7.

  • I deal with it every single night.  Usually 6-10pm.

The worst part?  I am by myself with ds31 and #2 since DH works until 1030pm.  It so tough.

I just tell myself that it won't be this way forever.

~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

  • I cried last night too--it just makes you feel like a bad mom and it's hard to feel that loving connection with them when they're just screaming in your face.  It's hard too to know when it's going to get better because every baby is different. I've heard anything from 6 weeks to 4 months.

  • When DD gets overtired and starts screaming I seriously swing her back and forth like I'm going to throw a hip out. She must think she's on a roller coaster but it's what works - lay her on her side with a warm blanket on and swing swing swing. Then when she's calm enough I grab the soother.

  • This happened with our first baby, it was soooo hard. Now with our 3rd baby we go through the tricks we learned from ds1 and ds2. We make sure he burps in the middle of his bottle and the end to decrease gas and fussyness. We rock him in front of microwave fan noise with all lights off. We use Colic Calm in between bottles ifhe has been crying for more then 30min. Put a little tiny sugar on end of paci which usually gets him to suck on it long enough to calm down and realize how tired he is. Take him outside bundled up and look at the stars. If ALL of this fails i put him in swing, I put in earplugs stay in same room and let him work it out. If he is going to scream while i hold him he might as well scream in swing. No reason for both of us to be stressed out
  • We're going through the same thing!

We are using gripe water and gas drops with every feeding to hopefully beat the gas before it gets LO upset. We are also changing up the food in the house so no one is full of gas....

We have to walk the LO up and down the stairs to get him to take a break from screaming. We also take breaks...one person goes upstairs with the door closed and the TV on and the other takes the baby downstairs and deals with the screaming. At least one of us is getting a break and we can switch off.

A friend just left our house with her 5 month old and she promised that this tapers off by 3 months, maybe even sooner. She went through this with both of her children and it's just a phase as their little bodies are growing and they are getting use to life outside the womb. Hang in there....we are basically counting down the days until we hit the next marker...3 months here we come!

  • I know where you are coming from. DS was colicky and I pray my DD isn't. It's so tough! You've gotten some good advice.

Some things that helped us: gripe water and mylicon, lots of time spent on his belly draped over one of our arms with our palm on his belly (helped get out the gas), warm compresses on the belly, bicycling the legs.

The good thing is it will pass, but I know while you are dealing with it, it feels like it never will!
