Hysterical shrieking

So my previously easy to read baby has started throwing hysterical fits. I'm talking about laying in my lap, just fine and dandy and all of the sudden he starts hysterically crying with streaming tears and is inconsolable. The first time I thought he was in pain... But that's not the case. It's not his gas or hunger cry either. Is this the 6 week growth spurt? He slept pretty poorly last night and was cranky all day yesterday. Please advise!

Re: Hysterical shrieking

  • As soon as I saw the title I thought of my LO. He may be overly tired.

I was out yesterday, and he started screaming, and turning red. Wouldn't take a bottle, no paci, I tried to rock him. We were outside so I thought maybe he was getting chilly so I put a jacket on him. Nothing. Then I wrapped up his legs in his blanket, and he fell asleep. He just wanted to sleep.

  • He could be hungry more often if he's having a growth spurt. Howie is coming out of the other side of that. It was by far the worst week since he's been born. Also his tummy may hurt if he's eating more efficiently.

ETA: our pedi said that as they wake up more from the sleepy newborn phase they have a harder time putting themselves to sleep.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • Yea I wondered all of that as well. However it's a completely different cry than the usual... On the look out for more growth spurt signs.
  • My baby does this when shes over tired or has gas pains. She unfortunately very interested in everything so she fights sleep and then is hysterical. We put her in her crib in her room with nothing around, keep it dark and just rub her back or stroke her hair til she falls asleep. Try a white noise machine/app/vacuum to help.
  • Over tired, growth spurt, reflux? It could be a few things. Watch and see....

Arching back, spitting up (may or may not), fussy while eating - Reflux

Overtired - Yawing, rubbing eyes, eyes are a little puffy - just tired.

Growth Spurt - could last a few days.

Good luck with LO - everything always seems to change just when things start to go well lol :)

  • Mine did this. I quit dairy and it stopped.

  • Evie started this about a week ago. I figured out she was overtired and fighting sleep. I takes everything in my bag of tricks to get her to nap, now.

Last night she was laying on the couch between husband and I, giggling away, then all of a sudden distressed screaming. It was close to her regular bedtime, so I calmed her with a bath, some feeding, and some rocking. That seemed to do it.
