I want to learn and need a sewing machine. I want to put one on my wish list for christmas. Who is better- Brother or Singer? I know Singer is the most famous but I vaguely remember hearing that they are not the best. I am looking at these two:
My top recommendation would be bernina. Runner up is viking. And honestly my advice is to not get a computerized stuff. You don't really need any of those special settings.
I have a Singer and I love it. It's nothing fancy but it gets the job done with no problems. My mom has a Brother serger and it works great too. But I agree with a PP, if you're just starting out, you don't need all the bells and whistles. Something basic will work just fine!

What do you sew? I've never sewn before except like hand sewing a button that falls off or DS's stuffed animals, etc. We aren't having more kids, otherwise I would do burp cloths and changing pads basically smaller and manageable things.
I have toyed with the idea of getting a sewing machine but not sure what a basic model would even cost and then what I would truly use it for. If I did it I would eventually maybe do gifts for friends I guess like burp rags, changing pads, washable wipes, etc and maybe hand towels in fun prints or something?
What did you start sewing? What have you worked up to? I'm just getting into the creative mind so I'm letting it run wild I like doing the tulle wreaths and I'm about to do my 3rd for a friend so I'm enjoying it and think sewing could be the same.

Whatever you end up buying, lessons usually come for free. I bought my bernina from a little sewing shop and it came with free lessons. Also, if you go to a small sewing shop (not JoAnn's) then you could get a used one for a good price and then trade it in later. I bought my bernina used and it only had 20 hours on it. It also came with free lessons and I learned SO much!
I never sewed before either...just buttons on shirts. But I got the machine, took a few classes and then I decided I was going to make EVERYTHING for LO's baby room. I make the bumper, mobile, bed skirt, drapes, blankets. They all came out great and as long as you put your mind to it, you'll get it done. Now I did make PLENTY of mistakes. I had to redo a blanket quite a few times. heh
Re: Moms that Sew (?)
Neither, singer sucks.

Mine is a slightly older version of this

and I LOVE it. I've had it for years and I've never had any problems.
Ditto. I have this one and love it. You don't have to use the embroidery and in fact I have done more sewing on my machine than embroidery.
