WDYD about "sassing?"

L just started talking back this week.  We ask him to do something and he says "No!" along with a string of incomprehensible words and some finger wagging.  He's clearly chewing us out, even if we can't understand everything he's saying.

We tell him to be nice and that it's not okay to talk to people like that.  I'm hoping it's just a phase -- that he's testing newfound verbal skills.  But, it's rather annoying.  Any suggestions?

  • After I try to stop myself from laughing, I do the same thing, I tell her we don't talk like that.

  • omg, that sounds soo cute and I dont' know how you don't laugh at it!!! hahaha.

hmm...at 2, I'm not sure what to do...besides maybe a timeout or ignore it...walk away when he does it??

  • Maddie went through a spell of this.  At first, I did what you are doing, but she has the thickest skull ever and she just didn't listen.

I started to ignore her and not respond.  This pissed her off no end at first but she now realizes when I ignore her, she has done something I don't like. She tells me she's sorry after a few minutes, and generally doesn't do it again. She'll try new words to tick me off and see how far she can go.

  • Anytime she tells mommy or daddy "no" she gets sent to her room.  I tell her that It's not nice to talk like that to people, and if she's going to talk like that she can play by herself.  It ticks her off and hurts her feelings, so I give her about a minute of crying in there before I go in and ask her to say sorry, and explain to her that it hurts my feelings when she talks to me like that.  She hardly does it anymore, but for awhile there we went through it over and over again.
