I'm already taking more leave (over 12 weeks) than is covered by FMLA. I just asked to extend my leave in an email to my boss. I am terrified that she will say no or fire me. I am now planned to go back to work the day after our huge annual event--my boss has told me that she's worked every night and weekend since I'm not there to help.
On the other hand, if I do get let go due to the request, at least that's a decision made for me, right? I've been really struggling over going back to a job I don't always enjoy that will take me away from my son 12 hours a day (long commute). I can't be a SAHM permanently, but I would like another month or two and then a new job much closer to home.

This is me exactly. I like my job OK, but the long commute makes it not worth it. Getting laid off would actually be the best thing to happen for my family. I say if you really do want more time off go ahead and ask.
