My mom has Celiac disease, so I've been worried about introducing LO to anything with gluten. After talking to the pediatrician yesterday we decided to go ahead and let her try the puffs so she can get started on finger foods.
Don't ask me where my brain was, but I didn't even think to ask about what to look out for as far as reactions go. I know to look for diarrhea and skin rashes, but is there anything else I should watch for? And how long would it take for symptoms to appear?
I 'll call the doctor on Monday and ask, but I thought I'd see if y'all had any insight!
Re: xp: Celiac
My mom has celiac also and the pediatric GI told us do not introduce gluten until after 1 year. You may not be able to see the effects fully- you might see diahrea or a year from now you or the pediatrician will realize the baby hasn't grown much or is not keeping up with the growth curve.I dont think rashes are necessarily a symptom of celiac, but may be a symptom of a wheat allergy which are two different things.
That being said, you have plenty of gluten free options for finger foods, aside from soft fruits and vegtables. Happy Baby puffs (in the new package) are all gluten free, Baby Mum Mums are also made of rice, so gluten free. I also give my 10 month old gluten free pasta pieces and brown rice (you can even make rice and vegetable "balls" so the rice is not as messy). I would try to hold off a little while longer to let her gut mature as long as possible.
