Possible *flameful* post...

I'm sure someone is going to jump all over me for this, but I just can't stop thinking about it.

Yesterday there was an article on msn about the Prop 8 in California.  It said that in exit polls, a majority of African Americans told them they voted yes for Prop 8.  I don't know why this bothers me so much but it really does.  The African Amercian community has suffered for more than a century with racism and discrimination.  But a majority of those who went out to vote had no problem discriminating against someone else.

Before anyone jumps down my throat, I know that every there were people from every race that voted the same way.  It just makes me sad that as a people we can't see any farther than our own noses.

  • I agree w/ you.

The stats on prop 8 make me want to cry.  Something like 70% of AAs voted yes on it, and the turnout amongst that group was huge as well.  So while it's great that the turnout was good, and it's great we have a minority president, at the same time, another group of people lost rights that day and are second class citizens.

  • I agree with you.  Most people have experienced some sort of discrimination in their lifetime (not comparing to what African Americans have).  I just don't get it.
  • No flames here, I agree with you.

  • I totally agree and I don't care which group voted for it, I think its disgusting.

  • I agree 100%. We had the same ammendment here in FL and I was looking at the statistics in the exit polls that was broken down into race, sex, etc. The highest percentage of voters in favor of the ban was first black males, second black females, then came the hispanic M and F.

What I found the most uplifting/upsetting, depending on how you look at it, was the very clear cut bell curve in relation to education.

  • I think it makes perfect sense. The same people who voted for Obama were also voting for his policies. I know Obama called for a no-vote on Prop 8, but he still is anti-gay marriage. Which, hah.... doesn't make much sense, does it...?
  • On the news they were saying that there were two reasons the AA community overwhelmingly voted yes - one was their churches (pastors were encouraging them to vote yes on 8) and the other is that in the community there is a strong belief in males being very masculine, aka not feminine in any way and definitely not gay.

  • why does it not make sense? He could be against it but not want it overturned.

  • I think it is horrible that gays do not have equal rights and I think one day future generations will look back and wonder what the hell was wrong with people to vote against it, just like we look back at how disgusting slavery was. I don't understand people that voted for it because the bible is against gay marriage, the bible is also against inter-racial coupling and for slavery.....so .......
  • I think that now the people who proposed for prop 8 to even be voted for are trying to now say it was unconstitutional for them to even put it on the ballot.  They only put it on there so it would be protected by law.  They thought for sure it was a shoe-in.  So now that they lost they are trying to fix what mess they made.  Dumb-asses.  I hope they can prove that it was unconstitutional so all of the people who were married can stay married.  But I think they are going to have a hard time with it.  Sometimes you need to just leave well enough alone!

  • Obama is more for "civil unions" than marriages for those who are gay.  He feels that the rights/privliges should be there but it shouldn't be called marriage.  If I am free to marry who I love why should my gay friends?
  • I just reread my post and it is hard to follow!  Sorry!  I was trying to not make it a long drawn out post and I think I sounded like I was just rambling.  My bad.

  • agree.

No excuse. Non of any one's business. No matter what your beliefs are. Also shame on you..who ever voted yes. Way to practice what you preach.

  • I think a lot of people that voted yes do not know anyone who is gay and so they are not that concerned.  Not sure...but I get that feeling talking to people.  It is discrimination...just not race discrimination.
  • Was it George Lopez who said that it's really nice when 2 minority groups can get together and find another minority group to discriminate against?

I think Obama's view....and I didn't vote for him, so I'm not positive....is that he's not for gay marriage, but, in the case of CA, so many people were already married that it's not fair to just take it all away.  So, while he might have been FOR a gay marriage ban in FL where gay marriages haven't taken place, he's was AGAINST a gay marriage ban in CA where they already have.

  • The YES on 8 campaign replayed a quote from Obama out of context and sent it out in robo-calls, specifically to African-American areas/households, to try and make it sound like he supported the proposition. I think that might have had an effect.  I'm disappointed in his overall stance on gay marriage, but he did say he was against Prop 8.  The good news is that the younger generation overwhelmingly voted against it, so as soon as the old bigots are gone, we'll fix it.  Sorry, that sounds mean, but seriously...OMG.
