Wanted a Moby. Now I'm Afraid...

I have a Moby wrap, it was a gift from my cousin because I was really excited about it and really wanted it. Chloe is 6 weeks old tomorrow and I haven't used it yet. I'm a total chicken. I've watched the video and I keep wrapping myself in it but it feels wrong? Maybe it's because my waist is tiny and my hips are big so everything just slides up into my waist...

But my baby is squirmy so I'm terrified to even try to put her in it... plus it's brown, and I have dogs, so now it's covered in visible fur because the ends hit the ground when I try to put it on and my floors always have fur despite vacuuming every freaking day.

Should I suck it up and buy and Ergo or Bjorn?

  • I'm scared of mine too!  I have tried numerous times to wrap it and just can't get the hang of it.  I think I am going to try the K'tan before an Ergo.  Those are expensive!  Just in case LO doesn't like being worn.

  • Infantinos look like a good intro to a structured carrier. They are like $15-20. I can deal with that I think!
  • I love my Baby Hawk mei tei. Infantino makes a similar one for half the price, though.
  • K'tan!!! Like the moby but pre done. So easy

  • Yes get a ktan! I love mine. No tying necessary! I wear it at least 4 to 5 times a week since he was 4 days old. Best baby item in my book!

  • I considered a k'tan but I'm 5'8'' and smaller on top and my husband is 6'1'' with broad shoulders and I want us to be able to both use the carrier
  • I just used my moby the other day, loved it! I found the user manual that comes with it very user friendly. I used the kangaroo hold, and it worked great. LO liked it too, he fell right to sleep, just make sure that its tight. I also have a small waist/ bigger hips combo. So i had the moby up higher. Good luck! =

  • I have a Moby and ergo and LO prefers the ergo and so do I. Love it!
  • I'm built the same way. It does end up sitting higher but I prefer that. DD is at my chest that way. Put LO in while asleep to avoid the squirmies getting in the way at first. That's the only way DD will go in right now but once she's in she's quite content for a while.

  • I was scared too. I picked one up last week. Cam now pretty much lives in it. I'm still getting used to it, but Im starting to get used to it. You at least have to try it once. I bet you'll like it.

Eta: that makes no sense. I'm really tired an too lazy to try and fix it.

  • I have a Beco Gemini and a Moby. We much prefer the Beco. I'm looking into a ring sling now too, just because I think it would be easier to nurse in, I tried nursing in the Moby and failed miserably. I wouldn't get a Bjorn, it's a crotch dangler and can be bad for baby's hips. See if there are any baby wearing groups or independent stores that sell carriers that might let you try a few. I bought our Beco and Moby blindly, but we have a consignment/green/hippy type baby store here and they have a baby wearing class once a month where they explain the differences in types of carriers and let you try them out. I plan to go to the next one.

  • I would suggest trying it out a few times before buying another one. I'm built the same way and I like that DD is higher up. It keeps her head in the right position. I put her in when she is most relaxed, Iike after a feeding or asleep. She sometimes fusses a little at first, but I walk around patting her bottom and bouncing a little, and she settles right in. She'll sleep for a couple of hours in it.

I also found the included picture instructions the most helpful. I still used the newborn hug hold and put it on "folded"

  • Give the Moby a shot before you try something else! We use the kangaroo fold and love it. I know they aren't for everyone but you gotta at least try it!

  • You should at least give it a try before purchasing a different type of wrap/carrier/sling.

If you still don't want to use it, then try a Beco or Ergo soft carrier.  Ring slings are also pretty awesome, and much less $$ than the soft carriers.  HTH and GL!

  • My little man is 7 weeks old, and very very squirmy... But I used the moby for the first time the other day and he fell asleep as soon I put him in! And stayed asleep long after I took him out! I made cookies and a pie with him mobyed to me!
I used and ergo with little sisters, an hated it, it was hard on the shoulders and if you had them on your back you tend to slouch forward because it feels as if they pull you backwards.
  • I had a lot of problems with mine until I found this video.

Now I wrap DS in it and he likes it, plus I can get stuff done around the house (this is the only way I wear it where it feels like he won't fall out). HTH...
