DS has recently started obsessing about his hands being clean. If they get dirty while eating, even while he is still eating, he gets very disturbed and upset and makes me clean him. He's been asking to have a baby wipe to clean his hands with in between bites. I've never known another two year old to even be bothered by messy hands. He reacts the same way if he spills his drink, even outside where the water will just dry up and he wants to clean it up. We'll go back outside and he will sit by the door with a rag wanting to go back out to clean it. Is this normal toddler behavior? I struggled with OCD as a young child and I don't want my son going through that.
Re: OCD in a two year old?
Assuming there's no other quirks, no. It would be something I'd keep an eye on though if there are other behaviors you're concerned with. My son has sensory processing disorder and it really peaked around 2. We started seeing the obsessive behavior with having his hands clean along with other behaviors like literally shaking in fear over different textures, hyperactivity/loved to crash into things, panicked over loud noises, problems focusing or hyperfocusing on certain activities, really orally fixated and would put everything in his mouth/overstuff his mouth with food, etc.
I'm sure 99% of the time it's just a normal toddler thing but it may be something you want to mention to the pedi if there are other behaviors along with that you're concerned about.
I could have written this post myself. DD is the exact.same.way. Hope it helps to hear that you can probably chaulk it up to normal toddler behavior. GL!
