Ugh, 2 bad nights in a row

We are lucky to have a very good sleeper generally, but that has made the past two nights even harder - DD has stayed up until 2 and 2:30 the past two nights. Right before that, she had her first 6-hour stretch of sleep, so I am not sure what happened. My theories are 1. Wonder week. 2. She was too cold when we put her down in her crib. 3. H suggested that she might not like having her arms swaddled anymore. Last night before I finally got her down at 2:30, I changed her from a onesie and swaddle blanket into a footed sleeper with the swaddle below her armpits. I am not sure whether it was the warmer clothing or taking her arms out that did the trick, or if she was just finally ready to go down at that time regardless.

Please hope it gets better soon - I only have one more week of mat leave! Maybe we will try white noise tonight as well. Any other advice? Anyone else going through this right now?

And Bemyselfandi, I know you don't care ;)

  • Okay, I think I may be able to help you here.

We had the same thing happen this week. Sergio usually sleeps 5-6 hours at a time and only wakes up once throughout the night (I don't count the 6am feeding as a MON feeding...we're up starting the day). Two days in a row this week, he was up every 1.5-2 hours screaming for a bottle and SO couldn't get him to sleep until 10-11pm (he usually is down by 8pm...9 at the VERY latest). I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on, so I googled everything in the world, of course. Nothing we weren't doing already was listed. Then, I thought...maybe he's still hungry? So I upped him from 4oz to almost 5oz and guess what? He was back to his old self. He went to bed at 8:30pm last night, like usual, and only woke up at 3am, like usual.

So maybe she's still hungry? It's worth a shot...if she's full, she'll just spit it back up, so it couldn't hurt to try!

  • I can totally sympathize.  I don't have a great sleeper right now.  We had two good nights in a row this week, and I thought I had landed in the twilight zone.  LO goes down for the night around 10-10:30 and is often back up at 1 or 2.  He's hard to get back to sleep after eating at that time, and no matter what, DH and I just can't seem to get more than 3 hours of sleep out of him at a time.  It's particularly bad at night these days, as he often realizes that he's no longer being held, and wants to be cuddled.  We've kind of just given up trying to control things, and are still letting him do what he wants.  However, it's super hard as a parent (and one getting concerned about mat leave ending soon!) to get so few hours of broken sleep.  Also, my little guy is a dreadfully loud sleeper and grunts and "talks" all night long, which wakes me up.  If it weren't the end of my mat leave, I'd be wishing he'd hit that 12 week mark ( I'm hoping this is around the time when he will outgrow a lot of the crying and poor sleep issues)!  Hang in there!

  • I agree with the PP who mentioned maybe upping the feeding. My LO has been eating 5 oz now before bed and is sleeping 6.5-7 hour stretches. Granted, every baby is different but it couldn't hurt to try!

Yeah, I should have mentioned that she does tend to cluster feed during this time. Last night, I tried to rush her through it, and she spat a bunch of it back up. She is usually not a spitter, but that was a big one out her nose, haha. She eats a little at a time, does some mild fussing if you don't hold her right, dozes off in our arms, wakes wide up if you put her down, then eats a little more. On and on for 2-3 hours. Oy! We could try waking her up to start eating earlier, though.

  • No advice, but you're not alone!!  DS2 stays up until 12, 1, or 2 crying several nights a week......ugh.  I think he's fighting sleep in the evenings, and then getting himself overly stimulated.  Good luck!
