Bought some "gently used" covers from a friend...

Mostly thirsties I think...  The white trim on them looks a little dingy.  Would you recommend just throwing them in the wash?  I was planning to make my own CD detergent, but haven't yet.  Can covers go in with regular clothes?  I make my own regular laundry soap out of ivory bars, borax and washing soda.

I don't see why not unless you're worried about your LO having sensitive skin. It's not like you have to worry about the covers repelling I guess. I would just make sure you don't toss them in with something that might bleed onto the FOE.
