Follow up on sick LO

Follow up on sick LO.

So it's the croup! His pediatrician says it is croup and whooping cough season and she has been seeing a lot of children lately with this but DS was her first infant so far this season. She then proceeded to tell me croup is a little more alarming in infants his age and gave me a huge list of things to look out for and mostly listen for since its an inflammation in the vocal cords.

This explains his hoarse cries, flem sounds in his throat, and odd sounding cough. Basically the only thing to treat it is to get a humidifier or stand in the bathroom with him with it steamed up from running hot water. She said if it doesn't progress and he doesn't get better then a stay in the hospital with IV and steroids will be our next stop. Definitely do not want that so I'm hoping for the best.

Anyone else dealing with or have dealt with an infant having croup?

  • Yikes, I'm sorry.  Joaquin had croup when he was 18mo old, so not an infant but scary still.  He did end up having to get a round of steroids in the ER because he had it so, so bad.  Hope your little guy gets better quickly!

  • My son had croup when he was 3 months old. Just keep up with the humidifier and sit in the steamed bathroom with him. Cold air is also good for him. If it's cold by you at night, bundle him up and let him breathe the air. Good luck.

  • Thanks, ladies! I hope he gets better too.

  • Cold air can help too. Sometimes opening the freezer and letting your LO breathe in the cold air can help shock them into taking a deep breath and clearing out some of that yuck. Good luck & hope your LO is feeling better soon!

  • I'm actually debating whether or not my daughter's cough is croup! It sounds horrible and barky but she isn't struggling to breathe and has no fever. I'm watching her closely though and may take her in tomorrow.
