Babies: 3 - 6 Months

first vacation with baby...

i must be insane. back when i had a sleepy perfect 3 month old, DH and I planned a vacation. I remember people telling me you can't let the baby change you, just make the same plans and involve the baby, now I realize, they were crazy. Now we have a lovely but busy 5 month old and I'm thinking this is going to be rough. So I need some advice and encouragement.

So we will be begin with a wedding in Georgia, make the drive to Kentucky to visit graduate school, then to Tennessee for a family visit and finally back home to Georgia. Now, we will take a full 6 days to travel, with stop overs and I think the most we will be in the car is 6 hours. On that day we plan on getting up really early and doing most of the driving while LO is asleep, then taking a nice break for lunch.

We EBF so I won't need to worry about bottles or formula, but for those who have traveled with their babies, any advice? What to pack and what to pass?

TIA!

  • We went to the Outer Banks for vacation when Garrett was 8 weeks.  It was a 9 hour drive and he slept most of it except stops to BF, diaper change and stretch his legs out.  Make sure you pack a bunch of onsies in your diaper bag.  He went through 3 changes (diaper blow out and massive spit up).

  • Can you sit in the backseat with LO? I've made 6 twelve hour road trips with DS so far and this was helpful to be right there when he fussed pretty rare. Also brought a bottle of BM because when u just need to make it to the next gas station to pull over, u can give LO a sip of the bottle to calm them for the 15 mins you need. The biggest thing I did was track his feedings. I know he eats every 2 hours so rather than wait until he cried I would feed him at stops where we were close to that time. Good luck!

  • Do whatever you can to stay as close to his normal schedule as possible and you should be fine. Your stops might have to be a little longer for a six hour drive but as long as you plan to drive during at least one long nap period you'll be fine.
