? For those who are doing Ferber

We are starting sleep training tonight and have decided to use the Ferber method. We put DD down awake and she rolled around or a few minutes, no crying. Now she is crying for 30 seconds or a minute and going several minutes not crying. So when should we go in? If she does 3 minutes of sustained crying? Or the next time she cries? Or should we just leave her as long as it is just short crying spurts? What would you do?

  • You dont HAVE to go in and check if she isn't crying hard or the crying is not sustained. Sometimes chcks can make it worse if they are calm or starting to settle.

This. But if you want to, you can. If it was me, and LO wasn't crying, I would wait. Going in might upset LO. Totally up to you.

This. Check-ins actually made the whole thing worse.

  • Thanks! That's what I was thinking but for some reason I think I built this whole sleep training up so much in my head I just didn't want to screw it up! She fell asleep after about 20 minutes of rolling around, only cried very briefly a handful of times and then went to sleep. I hope to goodness it wasn't a fluke and every night is like this :)

  • Always check on a crying baby! My MIL recommended to me to check baby every 5 min and increase of 5 min every time afterwards. For ex: 5, 10, 15 min etc... I have been using the baby monitor to check on him and he is only fussy when he needs something. If you are confident then baby will be relaxed!
