Baby won't drop!

I have mostly just lurked on this board so I hope you dont a quick intro and question.

I had a c-section with my first son at 41 weeks after a failed induction. No progress at all at 41 weeks and as soon as they turned on the Pit his heartrate dropped. I wish I never even let them try it... So I knew I wanted a VBAC for number 2. I changed doctors and waited my year between birth #1 and try to get pregnant for #2. My OB is super supportive and had a VBAC herself. I trust her.

So here is my issue now, I will be 40 weeks on Monday and my OB is worried about how high up my son is. Again, no progress at all and I have tried everything (EPO, walk, sex, ball, reflexology...) She doesn't think he will drop on his own and is worried he wont fit through my pelvis. Like I said, I trust her and if her experience makes her think that, it worries me. She is willing to let me go as long as I want and really wants me to have the birth experience I want but she can only do so much. So now I am at this point, do I just schedule the c-section next week and get it over with or how do I get him to move into my pelvis???

Has anyone had a baby really high up like that and still have a VBAC? (TMI,my OB has to push my belly way down to even get a fingertip in to see if I am dilated)

Any tips as to how to get baby to drop? She said we can wait it out until 41 + a few days to see if anything happens but she said to try to induce at that point if baby has not dropped and I am 0 dilated and ect is not a great idea and she will only do induction if my Bishop score is ok.

Thanks for reading.

Re: Baby won't drop!

  • 1) not dropping until labor starts is not a big deal don't let her stress you out about it. It's ok that baby is still high.

    2) see a Webster qualified chiropractor if baby needs more room a good adjustment can help the pelvis open up.

    3) try spinningbabies to make sure baby is in a good position and try squats. Especially do a side lying release.

you aren't to 40 weeks yet and things can happen fast try not to worry too much and give yourself as much time as possible. I know a lot of successful VBAC Moms who didn't have baby until 41.2-3 and were sure they'd never go into labor but had patience and sure enough baby came on it's own time.

how sure are you of your dates? If you ovulated a few days late you are still a week away from 40 weeks.

  • Try to relax! Like hope said, you're not quite 40 weeks, so it's not that shocking that you're not dilated and the baby is still "high" - how much your body looks like you might go into labor is not a predictor of going into labor.

Both my kids came at 41+ weeks, which isn't fun, but it is what it is. I would decline anymore internals until you go into labor and/or hit the time limit (speaking of which, if she's willing to go 41 plus a few days, I would personally push that to 42 weeks).

  • It's my understanding that second (third, fourth) babies often do not drop until labor starts.  I'd say if you are comfortable waiting, wait and keep trying to get labor started on your own.
  • I realize you posted a week ago, but my 3rd baby was SO high up right until I was in labor. Then she literally dropped so fast I got the rush of "OMG I HAVE to PUSH" at like 5cm! But that evened out and went away until it was time to really push. But she dropped really really fast.

  • My doula told me the other day that 2nd babies typically drop much later than first babies. Usually, they won't even drop until you're actually in labor. Praying it goes well for you!
