Curious about my odds...

Hello ladies :)  This is my first post here!  I am very early on (in my fifth week) and just found out a few days ago.  Of course my mind is spinning with a million questions, and I am curious as to what my odds might be for having twins.  The facts:

I am 31 and this is my first pregnancy.

My dad is a twin and his twin has twin children.

My brother was a twin but my mom lost one.

My husband's father has twin siblings.

So...any thoughts or opinions?

  • I found out that I was having twins when I was just 5 1/2 weeks along and it was too early to get a heartbeat then. I went back at the 6 1/2 week mark and they were able to get 2 viable heartbeats on my twins.  My doc told me that once they got 2 heartbeats that I had a 95% chance of carrying both to 'term', whatever that may be for twins since they come early. Basically she told me that I had the same miscarriage odds as a singleton pregnancy once the heartbeats are found.  I should mention that mine are fraternal twins.

Good luck to you!!  I'm only 16 weeks along and up until my 14 week appointment I was still asking the doctor "are there still 2 in there?!?!".  I'm still wrapping my head around it but very excited.

  • That really doesn't tell much. The twins on your side - fraternal twins? Identical? What's your ethnicity? Any fertility drugs?

Your husband's side doesn't play into it at all. You're still on the low end of the scale as far as age being a factor, as older moms are more likely to conceive twins.

  • Your mother getting pregnant with twins increases your odds slightly, but even that's not definite. If she was pregnant with identical twins, they are thought not to be hereditary at all. Your husband's family history of twins plays no role.

It's most likely coincidence that there are so many twins in your family! Good luck, and let us know when you find out! :)

  • I had the same question. We know from ultrasound that I released 2 very healthy eggs from clomid and that my H has a very high count. We also have fraternal twins and triplets (all lost but 1 each pregnancy) all natural on my side (mothers sister and father's mother) and twins on his. I have had 1 very healthy pregnancy before that was possibly a twin pregnancy naturally but the u/s was after some bleeding so it's hard to say.

We are waiting to see what happens and doing some planning and looking into things just in case.

  • Thanks for the input. FYI all the twins were fraternal, and to answer the other question I am of Sicilian and Welsh decent.  I don't have my first appointment until 9 weeks (Oh the wait!).  I know the odds are slim regardless, just something fun I've been thinking about.

  • The fact that your brother is a twin caught my eye but, it depends on the circumstances that your mom got pregnant with twins.  If she had IF treatments to get the twins means zero chance on your part.

My guess is that you don't have much chance of getting pregnant with twins however, that's just an educated guess on the information that you gave us.

  • Ditto the others.   Plus keep in mind even if you did inherit a hyperovulation gene, it doesn't mean that the month you conceived you released more than 1 egg, or more than one egg was fertilized and implanted growing into a viable embryo.  So you might have a slightly increased chance but their are a lot of factors involved.  If we were going on odds, you likely have a singleton but you will find out for sure at your first u/s.
  • We just found out we are expecting twins!  I'm only 27 years old, and I've had no fertility treatments... I just switched to whole milk haha :)

With that being said, my mom is a fraternal twin, and she also had fraternal twins, so yea, they run in my family :)
